Kies for Windows 8? "unable to find software to recognize device"

I went to samsung.com/us/kies and downloaded kies for windows.
I have win8 64 bit.
It installed fine.
During the install, it mentioned something about installing additional/universal driver, but suggested that it wasn't necessary if I'm running android on my phone (which I am), so I unchecked it.

After, when I plugged in my phone, I got an error: " Attention: unable to find software on your pc that can recognize your device. Service pack 3, windows media, must be installed for windows xp."

Of course, I'm not running XP.

HELP! What should I do?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I'm running Windows 8 64 bit with a Galaxy SIII and have got Kies to work OK, but it was a bit of a fiddle. I don't remember to dialog regarding the additional driver that you mention, but I suggest that you uninstall Kies, having made sure that the 'phone is unplugged first, then reboot your PC. Then reinstall Kies and if it offers to install the additional driver, accept it (you DO need the Galaxy specific driver). When you run Kies, you may have to do so in either Windows 7 or Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode. If you don't know how to do this, then I will explain:-

Right click on the shortcut to Kies which should be on your 'old style' desktop (press Windows + D to get there) and select 'properties' . On the 'compatibility' tab check the 'run this program in compatibility mode for' check box and select the appropriate option.

Hope this helps

Barney

Brilliant!! I totally forgot about compatibility mode, and I agree about uninstalling and re-installing, this time accepting the additional driver.

Great suggestions!

I seem to recall a thread asking if you can upgrade to Jellybean without kies. I will search the forum to see if that's an option as well. Alternatively, I do have a win7 laptop & another win7 desktop at home (not my primary), but I'd like to get it working on my win8 box.

Thanks,
Mike

The options are if you have an AT&T Device Tech center near you, they can flash JB for you or waiting on this OTA they are now releasing that is half the size.

OTA for ATT? I thought that wasn't going to happen!

Should I wait a week and see if I get it?

Thx
Mike

They said and Samsung still says OTA wouldn't happen, but people have been getting it the last couple of days and it's been confirmed in "Android News" sources. It is Wi-Fi download only and a staggered roll out, but I would imagine it will go out quickly as many upgraded a month ago.

I'm totally frustrated.

I tried running the setup in compatibility for XP SP3 and it hung, didn't fully launch.
Then I tried running the setup in compatibility for windows 7. The thing ran in slow motion took almost 40 minutes, but eventually finished. When asked if I wanted to install the additional drivers, I said yes.

When I connected my phone USB, it didn't connect (just kept said connecting).
I tired this with usb debugging mode on & off, no difference.

Then, I tried running the setup on my win7 laptop. It died in the middle of the setup.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE???

Thanks for any thoughts.

Should I just wait for over-the-air?

Was was the other method (short of going to the ATT STORE) of installing this JB?

Thanks,
Mike

Kies can be difficult, I only use it to update only and do a fresh install each time. I've never had problems with Kies. Did you try turning off your firewall and AV on your computer? Also, there are a couple of tricks I remember from before. Take the battery out for at least a full minute, TURN OFF your computer, hook your phone back up to your computer (after turning the phone back on) THEN turn your computer back on.

Also, Samsung's website has a free 24/7 livechat and they got many going with Kies.

Now in my area, no "AT&T Store" can update it for you, only the Device Tech Center for AT&T can, but all areas don't have those, so I don't know if the stores will do it if they don't have a device tech center in your area.

Good suggestions about AV & firewall.

However, I tried it one more time (this time on my win7 laptop). This time, I rebooted first, and didn't RC "run as administrator" - I just double clicked it. The install seemed smoother, and did ask me if I wanted to install the additional drivers, which I said yes.

IMPORTANT: when I connected my phone, I saw the same "connecting" message which stayed on for more than 5 minutes. This time, I checked the notification area near the clock. I double clicked the icon about it installing drivers, and saw that 2 of the 4 things completed, but it was waiting to check windows updates for newer drivers. This time, I remained patient. I felt like it took about 10 minutes, but it finally completed, and finally found the phone, and said I had newer firmware!!

So, moral of the story, WAIT WAIT WAIT !! It eventually found the phone!

I will apply the update tonight, but will uninstall lookout first (per another suggestion in another thread).

I'm emotionally prepared to erase the phone after IF I have problems, but I may see what happens without the erase-after.

Thanks everyone!

Mike

Oh I wouldn't worry about Lookout, I didn't uninstall it before updating, but it's not a big deal to uninstall that and reinstall if that makes you more comfortable.

Also, when updating, there are times, depending on the speed of your connection, that it will seem like the phone is doing nothing, wait it out. I was done in just a few minutes, some people, took longer, lots longer. Again, if you start having any issues, just open another tab, google "Samsung live chat" you will find the link and they will answer you questions about what is going on, if it is taking too long and what to do if you have to restart during the upgrade, which you are not supposed to ever do, but Samsung can walk you through it.

BIG THING: MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS CHARGED UP TO 100%. Mine was a bit lower, I didn't have a problem, some people at 50% didn't have a problem, but many, many did. Just better to have it charged up.

Ironically, for all my effort 2 days ago, wrestling with Kies on win8 & win7, I got the over-the-air update last night when I got home. My phone is running great. I won't be erasing it and starting over just yet. I really like google now.

Thanks to you and everyone for answering all my questions over the last few days.

Try this then.
Go to C:/Program Files/Samsung/Kies
and find the "Kies.exe.config". Open it with NotePad and find the line:

<supportedRuntime version="v4.0" />

highlight it and delete it. Save the file with NotePad. Then try kies again.

also give this a try too. go back into the directory I outlined above and delete these lines:

<supportedRuntime version="v4.0" />
<supportedRuntime version="v2.0.50727" />

press save with NotePad. Try Kies.
