Kies taking too long

Today I decided to install the Kies and do the backup for emergencies. So after successfully installing the Kies from the Samsung's official website I connected my phone to the USB and PC. I checked the options which I wanted to take back up for but it took too long whenever it came up to the Apps but the flow that shows from right to left and left to right was running. I did this 3 times and each time it did take more than 2hours with no results. It kept taking backup and neve r stopped.
How to deal with it? Doesn't Kies work good?

No, Kies is horrible. I've never gotten it to work correctly either. Boot into recovery and backup there instead.

I've never had any problem with Kies. I don't remember selecting/excluding apps, so whatever the default is seems to work fine for me. I've only got about 80 apps installed so perhaps that's the difference?

Anyway, all I cared about was backing up/restoring information (contacts, SMS/MMS, etc) and I've tested that by wiping the phone and it worked reliably.

And how much time did it take?
I also have 79 apps in my phone but it takes a hell lot of time and looks perpetual.

chirag05,
I'm not sure what's going on - in my Kies software (Version 2.6.0.13074_14) there's not even an option to backup apps - all that shows up in the "Data backup" tab is:
- Contacts
- S Memo
- S Planner
- Call log
- Message
- Videos
- Music
- Photos
- Miscellaneous content files
- Email account information
- Preferences
-- Other Preferences
-- Network settings and bookmarks

It took ~4 minutes to backup everything.

I guess you are using the Kies Lite version. I'm not around PC once I get there will confirm my version.

Omg. I fear now I don't also catch the same bug as you have caught. I just checked the Version and after several attempts finally it updated to the version you have put there.
It is too late here. Probably will check it tomorrow.

GSDer - you are right after the update it didn't show the back up option until I plugged the USB in. So after 3-4 times making the backup last time finally it did and took around only 10mins.
Note - I didn't select Photos, audios and videos. It may take sometime if you suspect it is taking longer than better would be to take the backup again until it backs up.

And how do you do that?

I believe the correct combination of keys is home + volume up + power while you boot. I can't really remember Samsung stuff too well. Most of the time I use adb to do this anyway out of laziness.

adb reboot recovery

Oh. I actually figured that out lil long ago and was able to clear the cache successfully but thanks for the response. :D

Slow Kies
Download and install Kies3 from
Kies | Samsung UK
Open Galaxy 4 but suggest disabling Wifi and putting in Airplane mode to avoid inadvertent or unwanted activity.
Connect Galaxy S4 by USB to back of computer (Not front, Why? Not a clue!)
It seems to work even with a long extension cable if connected to the back of the computer!
(Speedy ? particularly in comparison with often called bloatware of Kies)
Kies3 may report unsupported device.
However Windows XP should open a Portable Device Screen enabling a Windows Explorer folder , which should allow file inspection and transfer etc. It may help to open a second ?My Computer? Window or Windows Explorer screen.
This will allow speedy file management, if this is all that is wanted.
Of course you may also use Cloud based systems such as Dropbox.
If you really want Kies then it may now load surprisingly quickly (i.e. within a minute or two - as opposed to the 10 minute or so ugly work around that I found. This involving connecting the S4 Galaxy phone, selecting the trouble shoot connection button, disconnecting the phone, then after following the procedures reconnecting the phone to the USB Cable again.)
Frankly I would personally avoid using Kies for anything.
I keep getting a frustrating nag to update the firmware on the Galaxy S4 phone. It carries disturbing warnings about possible effects on installed apps, and about not turning off the device once the update has started. What is really disturbing is that there are two buttons, install now or install later. I do not want to install the update at all. I am quite satisfied with what I?ve got. The problem is that there is eventually the possibility of inadvertently selecting the Install option. My Asus fonepad allows me at least to turn off the unwanted update notification screen.
Research has indicated that possibly upgrading using the phone connection may be preferable because apparently Kies mav reinstall the whole firmware system (slowly) and not just necessary alterations.
Moreover the upgrade seems to have little or no effect, apart maybe for a slight increase in speed. See:
Samsung Galaxy S4 Software Firmware Update XXUEMK9 - YouTube
I have often attempted upgrades in the hope of getting better performance, only to be seriously disappointed (e.g. with Acrobat PDF reader with its annoying scroll needing one to keep pressing the scroll button on a suitable mouse ? really horrible ? hoping always that this will be remedied, but it never has been) . I now do not bother with time consuming voluntary upgrades, even when there are alleged security issues.
There is now such a variety of devices and systems that what works for one may not work in the same way for another. It is extremely frustrating.
I would frankly not recommend using Kies in any situation and use kies3 to facilitate file transfer.
Kies may not be compatible with Windows8 (at least a Samsung Windows indicated compatibility with XP, Vista, and & 7. And Kies3 with XP, 7 and 8) and that Samsung Galaxy S4 phone was not compatible with Kies3 (which it is not, at least on my computer). So what about someone with GalaxyS4 and Windows8?
Of course to say that Kies is compatible with XP, Vista and 7 doe snot exclude that it may be compatible with 8 but it does not give rise to any confidence.
The phrase ?The ship was sunk due to the lack of a half penny worth of tar? seems to apply not only to Samsung, but also increasingly to Microsoft (end of XP support, Youtube crashing on Windows 8.1 using Internet Explorer, but not, thankfully, using Google Chrome!) at least on my devices ) and even Apple (File transfer for iPAD) .

I've been using Kies to backup and it works fine. I found that when you select individual files, like photos, and back up to Kies, it works. then go on to music separately, and back up. The smaller files, like email account information and preferences can be backed up at the same time. Backup large files individually.

Hi, if you have to backup each file separately I would suggest that the program is not working fine. I am having trouble backing up my GrandPrime. It is extremely annoying. This is not the first time I have had problems with this software. Samsung should address this problem for I am reading the same dissatisfied people in other forums but I find no solution on any of them.
