Kind of comical and sad - My Nexus was called an Iphone and my Urbane was called an Apple Watch

Today I went to a retail store to buy something. The cashier rang me up and I used Google Wallet to pay. The cashier said, "Oh you have an IPhone?" I said no, its a Nexus. She had no clue what a Nexus is. Then she asked me if, I had an Apple watch and told her no, its Android Wear.

Its sad to think that we have had Google Wallet around so long that people think that Mobile Payments are only made by Iphones and that smartwatches are only the Apple watch.

I simply can not understand all the hype around apple products. But it sure sounds android folks are a lot smarter. Hehehehehe

It's not sad at all. It's merely a reality check. Those of us who know about Apple Pay & Google Wallet & Android Wear & on & on & on make up a tiny minority of techie fetishists. The great majority of people just don't need to know a damned thing about any of it to live their lives; and a good chunk of 'em can't afford to give a crap about it either.

Someone mistook my gear 2 the other day for an Apple watch. I just thought it was funny.

Anyways its really a testament to Apples marketing. Can't really blame people for not knowing about things that don't get advertised.

Sent from my Galaxy S6.

Keep in mind that we are us and they are them. :) Its selection bias. We're discussing things on an Android forum... almost by default, our interest level in these devices is a fair amount more than the general public. To the 'average man or woman on the street', these things are glorified toaster ovens. They are appliances that allow them to post on Facebook or pin their lunch on Pinterest.... A fair number of them bought an iPhone for their first smartphone and just keep buying them.... to them, every phone is an iPhone because that's all they know.

An actual conversation I had last summer

iPhone owner, admiring the LG G3 I had at the time: "Hey.... is that a Samsung?"
"No, its a LG G3"
"LG? I have a fridge from them. They make phones? Are they like Samsung?"

Basically he didn't even realize that Android was a platform in and of itself... he thought they were all Samsungs, basically.

Yup. Much like people who say "I have a Droid" and I say "Turbo?" and they say "No, it's a galaxy". And they had no clue what galaxy it was. Look like a S3 or S4.

Its how in a sense Apple won. When I used my HTC One M8 to pay for things so many cashiers were confounded by the fact I could make payments with NFC and it wasn't till I get the Nexus did they think it was an odd a Non-Apple device was used to pay. That and the iPhone is one of the other big phones on the market that people know. To most there are three types of smart phones, Apple, Droid, and Samsung. All three had huge advertisement campaigns that succeeded. The HTC, Nexus, Motorola, and other brands are the lesser known lines of Android phones to the masses.
