So... why would you want to update to 4.4.4? I can understand wanting to update to "L", but what does going from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 get you?

Just because. Do you really need to know more than that? LoL

My M8 was on 4.4.3. Seemed a little smoother, but not much else.

#1 Fixes Bluetooth glitches.
#2 More accurate and consistent fingerprint scanner.
#3 Swipe for emergency lock screen number. Fixes accidently calling emergency number.

I don't have swipe for emergency lock screen, it's still a press the button?

I'm hoping 4.4.4 fixes the Bluetooth streaming audio problem I've had with two separate G5s. I get lots of pops. I've tried all the tips- turning off WiFi, clearing cache, etc- but it still occurs, and it makes listening to podcasts and music really annoying. I've heard 4.4.4 fixes it. I have stock 4.4.2 on my phone.

4.4.4 is just an incremental update. I would much rather have AT&T and Samsung focus on Android "L."

Does 4.4.4 still kill root?

It does from what I've read. But then, AT&T killed it with NG3, although there is supposedly a way to root now. Not a new version towelroot -- that will never be updated from what I've read, but a solution that will roll back your ROM.

In any event, if past performance is indicative of future actions, you won't be seeing 4.4.4 on an AT&T phone anytime soon. And you won't see 'L' until you buy another phone.
