Kuno tablets are slow

I'm volunteering at a school and have been tasked with figuring out if I can speed up 30 Kuno tablets. They run Android version 4.1.1.

My LAN and WAN have excellent performance as evidenced by PC and laptop performance.

First thing I did was to reboot so they get updates.

Once updates were finished, rebooted again.

Turned on Developer Options in Settings
Checked the box for Show Touches

Installed Simple System Monitor - noted the following:
  • CPU load average less than 1%. Even after opening Chrome and Playstore
  • Though CPU usage is low, it is never idle
  • RAM is 900mb with about 550 mb in use.
  • Some Network activity, mainly download. To be expected.
  • Zero disk activity, indication of no paging.

Installed the Facebook app to serve as my performance baseline since Facebook is crisp on both my Android phone and on my Linux laptop. (Facebook is insanely slow on the Kuno.)

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to Android Central! Those are very old and underpowered tablets, so you may just be hitting the limit of what they can do with how Android apps work these days (i.e., how much RAM they need, and the speed of the processor that's running them). I'm not sure if there's anything you can really do. To give you a frame of reference, my 2013 Nexus 7 (running Android 6.0.1) has become increasingly sluggish as well over the past year or so.
