With the lack of an SD card will I lose backup data from applications if for any reason the galaxy nexus needs to be factory reset? Not to mention mp3s

your apps are in the markets and your contacts are in google... what do you need to back up? things are going more cloud based where if you keep things actually on your phone you will eventually be in the minority. Google Music has all my music, pandora, google plus for texting and visual voicemail... not even going to use more than 1 or 2 gigs on my Nexus I'm sure...

factory reset doesn't touch the sd card

Internal storage is not formatted on a factory reset. Its treated basically like an SD card.
