Laggy Droid

A friend of mine has a Motorola Droid, they have asked me what is wrong with it so I thought that I would ask on here to see if anyone could help. The phone is really laggy. It also seems like everything wants to force close from time to time. And sometimes when you are just on the browser it will just close for no reason. Everything just feels slow and I was wondering if anyone knew a way to fix this problem. Thanks to anyone who helps.

Is it rooted or is it bone stock? How many apps does he have, if he has a lot and all of them are on the device memory that will slow things down. Also cut down on the number of text messages in each thread and delete all threads, that will free up some memory.

Its stock. There aren't many apps on the phone. It was a replacement phone a while back and there aren't a lot of apps on it. There is a task killer on it and I feel that it isn't showing all of the apps. It is also saying that there is only 24m available. I don't feel that that is right, but I could be wrong. The text messages delete by themselves.

Delete the task killer and clear cache, history, and cookies.

If the phone still continue to behave the same way - it's a possibility that there is a corrupt file, thus causing that problem. You might consider clearing out storage.

I did all of those things so I guess I will just see how it acts now. The browser isn't the only thing that is slow. Handcent is also slow and sometime the phone doesn't notify you of a text message all the time. I am not completely sure if these things have to deal with the other but I wasn't completely sure. You said it all right there. Replacement phones suck(I even wrote a thread about it), if your friend can, have him/her return it and get another one. I went through 3 before I got a good one.

Is it on 2.2? And I wonder if moving apps to the SD card affects performance? That's the only other thing I'd do in addition to the above.

my droid was Very laggy for months until i finally got up the courage to do a factory data reset! The difference is like Night and Day! I cant even remember the phone being this fast before. its nothing short of AMAZING!
Just make sure you have all the boxes checked for backing up data, and all your contacts come right back when you resync with Gmail. Apps took a day or two to return, but they all came back on their own. Again...AMAZING!!(settings and app data DOES NOT back up, so keep that in mind). free space went from about 40mb to over 120 after I moved the appropriate apps back to SD. I wish i'd done this months ago, but I wont let that much time pass before I do it again. and the beauty is..when I get that DroidX i've been eyeing synching to Gmail will bring everything with it!

also, all pics and music are on the SD card. Its all there when the phone reboots. Except for the contents of text messages and data in apps (like a to-do list app I have) there is really no risk. I run LauncherPro and it allows you to back up your home screen settings, and restore once it reloads. Very cool!

Good to hear about the stuff coming back after the factory reset, as my D1 is really starting to lag and other issues (random rebooting).... so I just might do it!
