Large "Speaker" button across call screen

When I make or receive a call a "button" the width of the screen titled "speaker" appears across the screen blocking the three "buttons" on the screen. When I press the button a little green light next to the word "speaker" comes on but nothing happens. I do not know how this button got there or how to get it off. PLEASE HELP!!
