So verizon is encouraging me to do a factory reset to deal random data loss. randomly throughout the day i have to restart the phone just to get data back which costs about 10% of my battery.

should i go for it or is there any work arounds. i would hate to have to set it all up again plus im worried ill be plagued by other problems like constant reboots and poorer battery life.. any suggestions?

I'm assuming by "data loss", you're referring to losing a 3G/4G signal? (as opposed to files being erased),

Did you install the OTA update, or are you still running the original OS?

I ask because the OTA did have a new radio component with it, so installing it (or not installing it) could possibly lead to an answer regarding your situation.

Some more info may also help us...
Are you in a 4G area? How strong is your signal when it is working? Does wifi work when the data loss occurs?

First, make sure you have Menu | Settings | Wireless & Networks | Mobile Networks [CHECKED].

If not, check it and re-test.

If that doesn't work...

Dial *#*#4636#*#*, (there is a Market app called "Phone Info" that will dial it for you if you prefer) select Phone Information, Scroll down to Set preferred network type, and select CDMA auto (PRL), then use the Return arrow to back all the way out. In a few seconds (3-30) 3G should appear. If this works, you're just experiencing the same thing most of us are experiencing with these data connection problems. When you want to test if you're okay again (maybe it's a VZW cell site issue) just run the same program and set it back to the default of CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto and back out with the Return arrow. See what happens.

If you have already tried this and and it never works, I would go ahead and try the factory reset as advised by VZW.

Thank you for the reply

Yes loosing the signal is what im referring to.

i did install the OTA update.

i am in a strong 4G area while at work. however to increase battery i have been using the phone info app and toggling to the cdma auto (prL),

when switching from wifi back to 3G i seem to be seeing the problem with loosing the data connection, although its happend under other circumstances as well.

Thank you,

yes i have that optiong checked. i have the app and am currently running the CDMA auto prl.

maybe instead of restarting i can just use that app to switch the connection back to lte or something.

i have a decent battery so i really dont want to push it witha factory reset. and it doesnt happen all the time, but def enough to piss me off when i realize ive missed text and calls from people calling my GV # or when i need internet and cant connect.

now im looking at my phone wondering if it is even connected or not because its not untill i try to open web page or send a msg that i realize its been down for who knows how long.

if i wasnt worried that the factory reset would do more harm than good, i would put up with the re-setting up and bite the bullet.

Am i even correct to be hesitant for that reason?

I'm going to be 100% honest here... I've never seen this posted anywhere else, and I've been too lazy to try to really reproduce this but...

I have found that frequently switching my device from 3G to 4G using the "phone info" app (or any method of changing the preferred network type), seems to screw my radio up a bit. I've noticed that sometimes when I try to switch it just drops connection altogether, and I have to reboot to get it back.

I'm also suspicious that it was the cause of this wifi to 4G handoff issues I was having, which I essentially had to flash back to recent nandroid backup to fix (would have to factory reset if not rooted).
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-thunderbolt/81367-switches-wifi-3g-when-screen-goes-dark.html

Again, just a theory of mine...haven't seen anyone else really report these issues. I, for now, just bite the bullet and leave 4G turned on. (and connect to wifi when I can).

I think you understand the pros/cons of factory reset. But... if it's really bugging you, as your post title says, it's the last resort prior to a phone replacement. And, a phone replacement has pretty well been shown not to fix these radio issues.

One thing you might try is simply restarting (I know you've probably already done that).

Another is to simply toggle the Airplane mode on/off - essentially resetting the radios without rebooting the phone.
