Latest Update - LTE On/Off

As I'm sure most of you are aware, the latest OTA update included a toggle between 4G LTE and CDMA.

This toggle is accessed by going into Settings / Wireless & Networks / Mobile Networks / Network Mode. Once you've arrived at this location, you have the option to select LTE/CDMA or CDMA only.

Prior to this latest update, several of us were using LTE On/Off to switch between 3G and 4G.

Once I knew this "new 3G / 4G " feature was included in the latest update, I believed I had the choice of continuing to use LTE On / Off or navigating through the menu items to arrive at the same settings.

Being the impatient type of person I am, LTE On / Off "appeared" to be the easiest way to go.

However, I've found that changing the 3G / 4G settings using LTE does not change the antenna setting. At first glance it appears as though the settings are changed but if you change the settings with LTE then navigate to Settings / Wireless & Networks / Mobile Networks / Network Mode, you will find that nothing has been changed at all. A subsequent check of LTE ( after menu navigation ) will reveal the changes did not hold.

In contrast, changing the 3G /4G settings utilizing the menu navigation method results in the correct antenna selection mode when viewed through LTE On / Off.

At least this has been my observation.

In short, the option we now have to switch between 3G / 4G using the menu navigation ( Settings / Wireless & Networks / Mobile Networks / Network Mode ) over-rides LTE On / Off.

Would someone else please verify my experiences with the two options.

TIA

Cliff

Jcase tweeted rhat LTE was broken by MR2, but some are saying that it still works.

Thanks, Robrecht

Well that sux and I can confirm it no longer works for me.

Not much of an issue though other than just being lazy since my battery normally lasts all day from
7am to at least midnight regardless if I make the switch or not.

I will admit I have a separate cell phone for work ( ATT BB ) so my personal cell doesn't get much of a work out other than calls to my wife during breaks or accessing blocked websites.

The "breaking" of the app was unintentional, but not a bad thing. The LTE On/Off app too often has caused authentication issues in our systems, as well as confusing people whom had no idea what the settings meant. The option in Settings, and the soon to be coming toggle widget, makes it a simple two choices with no negative repercussions.

CM7's notification power widget toggle works great. Just an fyi.

And, much to the humility of HTC/VZW, will likely work better than the integrated toggle widget that will be on the Thunderbolt later on down the road.

Indeed. I even know of a Verizon Wireless Technical Consultant who did not understand what some of the settings meant. ;-)

So, in a nutshell - the on/off for MR2 users is akin to the button to cross the street? Give one's finger something to do w/o actually doing anything?

The one I have opens the settings and PING is the first thing I see then scroll down to make the change. But the MR2 update toggle does look different. And that is the one we should use?

JFTR, I have never used LTE/OnOff. I have always used what was actually the 1st app to appear on the Market that does this ("Phone Info"). All it does basically is to dial *#*#4636#*#* and let you select it yourself. Should not interfere with anything because it is just like the newly built-in function but operates as a shortcut. You might want to try that. I like it.

L TE On/Off does not hold for me either with one exception. If I set to CDMA only with LTE On/Off will go to 1X when I check for software update and will complete check successfully. If I set to LTE/CDMA or CDMA with settings menu of phone will always say service is unavailable when checking for update. Also if set to CDMA PRL Auto with LTE On/Off check for software update will again show unavailable. I.E. I need LTE On/Off to be able to check for software updates.
