I want to believe, but I think Verizon is just giving us lip service so that the 14-day trial period expires and people are stuck with their phones.

LOL...well at least the read sounds promising....Always good speculation :)

I hope it's true, and I could see why Verizon would now do it. Maybe they have seen the progress made by the developer community, we are already able to root. If they made a unlock available they would make everyone happy and be able to tell who unlocked their phones to deny warranty replacement.

I'm not holding my breath that vzw has caved in to unlock the bootloader.
I think it meant to be confusing that's why even vzw's own employees don't know what's going on.

I'm not sure what to take from this, either all the verizon support people have been talking to are complete idiots and don't know the difference between a bootloader and global capabilities or verizon has decided to see the light...

Yeah ,I think both Vzw and Samsung are both equally to blame and pretty sure this means to unlock for global use,,,which unlock for global use means nothing to me.
Vzw for wanting the bootloader locked down pressures Samsung to do that.
Samsung for coming out with another phone thats unlocked ,but only available from them with Vzw's blessings,,,, a money racket seems to me.Seems it was a planned event by both companies

Probably just a CSR who doesn't know what a bootloader is and knows they will eventually unlock the "world" features.

Anyone have any updates on this confusing situation? I'm nearing the return date and am trying to decide whether to keep or not. Unlocking would convince me to start using the GSIII rather than return.

Yeah the update is that it is false and was meant to be an unlockable sim for global roaming, not the boot loader. There was an article on it on the front page a few days back and one over at droid-life explaining the confusion.
