Leaving WP7.5 and AT&T Behind Us

I've been with WP7.5 on a Samsung Focus, and my wife on the LG Quantum since Feb of 2011. This month I'm going to pay an ETF just to switch back to Verizon. The only reason I left in the first place was to save money, but the reception in our area has been horrible! No leaves on the trees at home led us to believe we had good signal throughout our trial period, so we didn't take them back!

As for leaving WP7.5, there are just too many things we're missing, and I'm not willing to wait for updates, or WP8. Lack of apps is one thing, but you can't customize much of anything. Even calendar reminders are absurd! It goes from 1 hr in advance of an appt, to 18 hrs! 1 day, to 1 week! And no custom alert tones, no alert reminders either. Unless I hear a text or call come in, the only way to know you missed anything is to hit the lock button. No audible or LED alert... total BS. I think the OS is very stable and reliable, but considering it's a few years behind Android an iOS, it should be!

We looked at phones at the Verizon store yesterday, and we're both leaning toward the Galaxy S-III. I thought my wife would insist on a keyboard, but I think the big screen swayed her away from the need. Also, the haptic feedback made her feel like she was using a real keyboard. I glanced at the Razr Maxx, but it didn't really grab my attention like the S-III.

Has anyone made the switch from WP7.5 to Android like this? And what were any of your concerns? The only thing I noticed missing was when I tap on a mispelled word. On WP, if you tap the word, suggestions come up, you tap that, and it replaces it. On the S-III, if you tap the word, it drops a cursor there, and you have to manually adjust it. Is there a way to change that? The WP method (surprisingly) seems better in this instance.

Welcome to the forums.

I use a third-party keyboard (Thumb Keyboard) that provides suggested replacements when you long press on a word. Sounds like the stock Samsung keyboard doesn't have that capability.

I didn't switch FROM a WP7 device though I do have one as a backup in case my GNex & iPhone crap out on the same day, LoL.
I like WP7 though yeah, customization can't compare to Android...but then really, can anyone current Smartphone. OS?

So it sits in its box for that one horrific day if it ever comes...until then, what I did take away from WP7 was its UI which I now use on my GNex thanks to a half dozen or so Apps - mainly Launcher7 & StatusBar+

Thanks guys, I'll have to check out those apps once I get my phone. I'll miss my Focus, but I think the GSIII will ease my pain! And I'll keep it around for an MP3 player/couch web browser backup. Verizon offered me 30 bucks trade-in for it, kinda worth it to just keep it around.

Welcome to AC!!

I was checking out a buddy's Windows Phone over the weekend, and, I agree, it did seem smooth and stable. Until Windows 8 phones though, I'm not really interested.

The S III is nice. I keep hoping that a certain co-worker will need advice from me so I can go over and play with it more. Lol.
