These things are often server side updates and have nothing to do with a Play Store update (other than if you don't have the up to date play services)

Google tends to be pretty cautious rolling out updates. They'll update a bunch of phones and see how that goes, then enable another batch.

It'll just out of the blue enable itself...

A bit confused here...

I have a Pixel 2 XL and, of course, it has Google Assistant installed. I'm guessing as a component of the Google app?

So, anyway, I visited the Play store from my phone and, after a quick search, found this, which begs the question - is this the same Assistant already on my device? If so, why does it offer an "Install" button? And, what would happen if I chose to install this version?
