LG G4 Does a plastic back really matter?

I'm with you on this. People crying about glass this and metal that and end up throwing a cheap case on it.

I have never and no doubt i wont get it,

Many scream for that premium design, and in house designers spend countless hours.

Meanwhile case manufactures spend 5 mins in C.A.D and the public fires on the case.

I can only scratch my head in disbelief lol

I just got the plastic metallic one today and I like the way it feels personally. Im gonna get a case anyways. I would have gone leather, but TMo only has thr brown, and it wasnt appealing to me...

For the size, this phone is light (coming from a HTC M7...I'm sure the plastic has a lot to do with that.

Re: Does a plastic back really matter?

I'm going to have to correct you (sorry)

There's no such thing as bullet "proof" glass only bullet resistant.

Yes I know that, resistant is what I meant. Long day yesterday and that is a technicality.

Bullet resistant glass is what banks and other businesses use. It isn't cheap plastic, but polycarbonate.

Re: Does a plastic back really matter?

Actually, bullet resistant glazing is a glass-clad polycarbonate. It's a multi-layered laminated configuration. Some banks do use a heavy polycarbonate products like Lexan but this would be completely different from plastic used on the back of the G4 or other smartphones being that they use specific polymers from assorted carbonate groups to get differnt properties like impact resistance, abrasion resistance, clarity, etc.

This is not a discussion I'm going to continue. As I said, with some phones, particularly the Samsung, it is made of polycarbonate, which is the product used for bullet resistant glass, not some cheap plastic.

I in no way saying the backs of a phone are bullet resistant.

Have a nice day!

It bothers me but not the end of the world.

I don't use cases only at work so this is why I dying to the brown Leather back.

Does it matter? Case or no case? I guess that depends on who owns the phone.
What's good for one may not not be for the other, certainly wouldn't begrudge a person whatever their choice might be.
Seems silly to worry about what others do with their phones.

In the case of the G4 the plastic back is very slippery, this may be one reason that I go with a case or opt for the leather back.

Be aware the black leather is slick as well. Hopfully a brown leather user will chime in about that color. I opted for the plastic back as I want the brown leather back.

I always do a case. Not to protect the phone case, but the corners. You drop it and hit the corner, the screen is going to crack almost every time.

Do you think a glass screen protector would prevent that? I had the 'hit the corner, screen crack" happen to my Note 2 and I'm paranoid about it ever since.

Doubt it.

OK -- You just sealed my fate (as far as cases/backs go)... I'm not going to get the leather back, and instead I'm going to get the plastic back together with a nice, safe Spigen. It will still look good, and I don't need to worry about drops.

Re: Does a plastic back really matter?

I have the leather back, and ordered a bumper with clear tpu case back.
While I LOVE the feel of the leather back. Like REALLY love it, I know me... I'm a little bit of a kutz.
That said, there's a screen protector on it and I'll put that case on it just pull the case off at night from time to time, at home, over the carpet.

You can have the leather back and a case.

Yeah, I've thought of that... as silly as it sounds, I think that if I had the leather back and a covering case (see-through) I'd be too tempted to just ditch the case. Honestly, I feel like a new expectant mother, not wanting to risk my pending newborn phone getting a boo boo.

I mean, in all likelihood I'll be getting insurance on the phone, so if it does drop and the screen breaks... well I can just get the phone repaired. Even without insurance, it would likely be around $200 to have the screen fixed.

So why am I being such a ninny? (I think I need smartphone psychoanalysis. If I had an iPhone, I'd just ask Siri. "OK Google" just takes me to porn sites when I ask it things like that.)

I never have my phone out of the case unless I'm sitting on the couch or bed. The one time I did that, I had a Note 2, dropped it on the corner. Only screen I have ever damaged in any way.

It was about &$190 for Samsung to fix it. I went with brand because it had the spen and I wanted an original screen with that.

Well I was kind of set on the leather but after reading this thread I'll just make use of the BB pre order gift card and get the vzw model with a plastic back. There s no way I'd go without a case anyway so that leather wouldn't be much good to me other than bragging rights. Not to mention I could see myself getting angry with myself I'd id damage the leather. XD
