If you unlock a t mobile version of the lg g7, do the software updates still come from t mobile?

Thx

I asked the same question and was told "Yes" by members here.

BTW, if you're thinking of running Metro PCS on it, this phone works great on that service. Far better than other unlocked phones I've tried on that network.

If you unlock it, yes. If you use it on a different carrier, they'll probably come from LG - or not at all. (The update can't tell whether the phone is SIM-locked or not. But some carriers won't send you an update if you don't have a current account with them, and other carriers can't send you the TMO updates.) Since MetroPCS is part of TMO, you may not even have to unlock it to use them - the MCC is still 310 and the MNC is still 260. (you'd have to change the APN or add a new one, though - the APN, MMSC and APN Type are different. [And TMO is funny with that - Mint uses an APN that works in most markets, but I have to use the TMO APN in Fayetteville, NC. The Mint APN won't work.])

There's really no reason for you to unlock it unless you're planning on leaving T-Mobile or traveling and using a different sim in a different country. Also of you're planning to resell it, you could get a couple bucks more if it's unlocked. The updates would come from T-Mobile, not LG, since it's the T-Mobile version of the phone.

My feeling in general is that as soon as possible, get the unlock code. It's your phone. Maybe you want to buy a second sim at the last minute for travel. Maybe you want to trade it or sell it quickly. Get it unlocked. The rule should be that the companies must unlock a phone by default once paid off.

ok thanks everyone. so makes no difference on the updates but i should unlock for flexibility. makes sense.

ill disable and delete what i can of their bloatware and unlock asap.

If you're with T-Mobile, international service is quite good, and you don't need too worry about unlocking for that. If you really feel you need to unlock your phone to travel, you can call them and get a free temporary unlock while you travel. Also, T-Mobile will unlock your phone for free as soon as you pay it off, so unlocking a T-Mobile phone should not be something you have to worry about.
