First, please excuse the lack of knowledge I have regarding Android devices. I love the phones; but am new to researching their features and specifications.

I want to get my brother an entry-level smartphone for his birthday (his current phone is not working well at the moment). I've decided on an Android device - the LG Phoenix. It has Android 2.2; and after reading and watching reviews, I feel that that might be a smart choice for him. He won't use a ton of apps; but will probably like the touchscreen since his fingers are big and he finds QWERTY keyboards tedious. He's in a band so he'd enjoy using the radio app and he'd browse the internet, too.

My overall question is if anyone within this forum knows if the LG Phoenix would be a smart buy. Would it be a good phone choice? Again, I don't know much about Android; but I know my brother would be more comfortable with an entry-level smartphone than something with a lot of apps and things he wouldn't use often.

Thank you!

Very good entry level phone. It now has gingerbread 2.3.4.
Pros.
small. Fits in hand. Easy one hand controlled
Easily rootable. Able to get ADMINISTRATOR controll so you can delete carrier apps you don't use.
Fairly inexpensive.
Internet
Wifi
customizeable. Just about everything can be changed to your liking.
external storage
Good battery life
lots of help here if you have any questions. Or problems.

Cons.
Processors low megahertz. No Netflix.or the sort. You tube does work
Low internel memory/ storage. External makes up for it.

As for apps you can uninstall them just as easy as installing. Your never stuck with it
Only stuck with carrier apps if you don't want to root the phone.

That's it for me. I'm sure others will have there own pros and cons.

Thank you so much for your input! It seems like a very nice phone. How durable is it? If I do get it for my brother, I'm going to also get him a case and a screen protector. When you say there is low internal memory, could he save a lot of texts and pictures? I like that you can delete the apps - I'm sure he'd be deleting Twitter and stuff like that to replace them with apps he'd really use.

One quick other question. I know there's Wi-Fi on the phone; but will he not have internet access if he's not near a Wi-Fi hotspot?

Thank you again! :)

Yes pictures are stored to the microSD card and he can put up to a 32gb one in there ... text on the other hand I think live in the phones internal memory which is separate from the SD card so he would be somewhat limited. If you decide to get him a case I like the body glove case you can get at Radio Shack and a few other places, its a cross between the soft cases and the hard cases ... pretty durable but a pain the ass to get put on the first time. As to the screen protectors get the expensive ones that cost about 15$ a piece (cant remember the brand name) they are so much better than the cheap ones that get all scratched up. Also he will most likely have to get some kind of data package if he goes with AT&T however the phone will work without a data package.

Thank you! I will definitely get a good screen protector; and thank you for recommending the case! It sounds great! We're with Rogers, so I would have to speak to them about fixing up his data plan; but that's okay, since I expected as much due to the upgrade. :) I'm glad he can take a lot of pictures!

just so were clear. the apps that are on the phone when you get it, they wont let you delete those. you have to root the phone to get rid of them. any app you get is removable.

seems durable to me.

with out a data plan he will not have internet away from wifi.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I did see in an unboxing that the apps you get on the Phoenix cannot be deleted. Thank you for reminding me. I'll be sure to get him a data plan. :) Thank you all for your help! You guys are very nice on this site! :)
