I have an Honor 8 and I love it. But I'm tempted to get the V30 when it comes it for several reasons (bigger screen, camera/video options). One thing holding me back is I'm not that sure about LG as a company and their software skin.

I haven't used an LG since a flip phone...how is the software experience? How is the quality of their phones?

Can't tell you much about the software experience,
But I will recommend to hold off few months , the price of their devices drop off dramatically

You'll be fine. I had the LG G5 then G6 and only recently picked up my first Huawei phone with the P10. I've already mentioned on this forum in a few places that I found the software very very similar. LG maybe a tiny bit better thanks to not needing to mess around with Notification settings like you do with EMUI.
As for quality of the hardware you'll have no complaints either. The build quality is excellent

It depends on who you talk to. There are people who don't like the UI. I think it's fine. A launcher takes care of most of it anyway. Some hate LG who have had a bad experience and some hate it just because they like something else better and think their brand is the best. There are plenty of people who own them that love t both the software and hardware. Biggest complaint right now is that we are losing the removable battery. I'm OK with that. Some are not happy with their cameras in auto mode. I prefer manual mode and LG allows a lot of pro style adjustments. It's an audio beast and while their are one or two comparable units out there for audiophiles I prefer the LG for its audio and because it has a few camera features those don't. I haven't had any problems with the V20. It's actually an excellent buy right now unless you want the latest and greatest.

I use Nova launcher which has made a lot of my device use fairly consistent. In my Samsung phones I tend to turn off many of the extra features as I don't use them.

I will backup and import my screen layouts using Nova as well. LG and Samsungs backup and restore software was always good for me when I do a factory reset (which I do after every major software update). Not sure how good Huawei's solution is. Otherwise you could look at 3rd party options for backup and restore.

I have not used Huawei devices, but one software feature that I miss from LG is the double tap the screen to wake. I found myself tapping my Galaxy S7's screen with my thumb a lot when I first gave up my LG G4. Other than that I didn't use any special software features or skins, etc.

I'll say that Samsung and my carrier have delivered almost monthly updates for Android security. I don't know about LG and Huawei but that might be a good thing to consider.

I remember looking up the specs for what LTE Bands are included in the Huawei or Honor phones. LTE Band 13 was not included, which pretty much makes those phone worthless for a Verizon customer.
