Hi - I'm a iphone user...so I have no android background and seeking some help.

Here's my situation: I have an elderly friend who has NO TECHNOLOGY AT ALL. Not even an email address. She's a badass. Used to be a go-go dancer in the 50s and 60s. She reads the NYTIMES and the New Yorker and said she would enjoy podcasts during this time of isolation.

So I'm getting my dad's LGL39C phone (it's old) and plan to do a reset of the device and load a podcast app on the phone and download a bunch of podcasts for her. I figure I can teach her how to update it from wifi...if a neighbor will give me their wifi password. Or I can update it once a week using my hotspot when I visit her (we hang out in her back yard at a safe distance).

Can someone point me to some good intro to android links for me to wipe the phone? And maybe recommend some non-bloated podcast apps that a really old phone could handle? Would spotify work on this phone?

Thanks for any advice you can give to someone who only knows how to spell ANDROID.

Welcome to Android Central! To wipe the phone, you just have to do a factory reset. Before you do that, go to Settings>Accounts, select your father's Google account, then tap Menu and Remove Account. Then go to Settings>Backup & Reset and do the factory reset.

Does your friend have a Google account? If so, then when you set the phone up after the reset, enter her Google account (if you want to set the phone up for her, she'll have to tell you her Google username and password). Then see if you can run Google Play Music. (Since that phone is fairly old and is probably still running a pretty old version of Android, there's a possibility that things may not work that well.) If Google Play Music works, then she can search for podcasts easily on that app and play them -- no Google Play Music subscription needed.

You said your friend doesn't have an email account, so you may need to create a Gmail account for her when setting up the phone. But make sure you write down the Gmail account email and password for future reference. Google Play Music is a great option. I don't think the standalone Google podcasts app will work with a really old phone. Any phone with an OS version under 4.4 is unlikely to find workable apps. You may need to check which version of Android you have by going into settings-about phone and see what number version it says there.
