I am wanting to buy a Samsung S5 but am wanting to know the longevity of this phone. When i buy something, I want to keep it for a long time. Anybody have any incite on how long will this phone last? Provided that I take good care of it.
Thanks
Also if you have any suggestions on phones that are "built to last" let me know.

Welcome to the forums. It can be hard to say about the S5 since it was released about a year ago. But I think as long as you get several batteries with some kind of charging base, you should be able to rotate through batteries and keep the device for a while.

would you say the in smart phones the battery is the first thing to go? Cause with the samsung you can replace the battery.

The battery will be one of the bigger concerns. However, keep in mind that there are other components that will wear out over time, the boards, even the screen, no matter how well you care for your device.

dont get the s6 in the AC app already shows that s6 has a non-removable battery and it's not water resistant but the s5 is I have the s5 running stock lollipop 5.0 and it's been great s5 us definitely a good choice

Be careful with the cover for the USB port as that can break off quite easily. But it is easy to fix yourself and they are cheap to buy. Don't think this cover will last at all...

What do you mean don't think this cover will last at all? are referring that i will have to replace the flap for the charge port or that the entire phone cover will not last?
Thanks

I'm posting specifically about the cover for the USB port and only the cover for the USB port.

ok thanks for the clarification. I am assuming you have an S5, if so have you had any other issue with it?

Well, I broke that USB cover off after 8 days of having it. But now I'm really gentle with it. That was nearly a year ago.

Nothing else problems wise apart from the Lollipop update which needs a factory reset done afterwards.

The phone is pretty durable despite criticisms of its plastic body. With water resistance it's an excellent long term phone. I've had my s5 for about 8 months and have not had any issues as far is the build quality. I've dropped it multiple times with a thin case or bumper case on it and dropped it in snow multiple times, wipped it off and have had no issues. Since it's not possible for anyone to have had the phone for longer then 1yr at this time it's hard to speak on how long it will last however, Speaking on Samsung products, I've owned a Galaxy nexus, galaxy s3, galaxy note 2, galaxy tab 3, galaxy mega 6.3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2012 edition. The only product that I don't still have in my household right now is the Galaxy Note 2 because I sold it in excellent condition in summer 2014. The nexus was replaced by insurance 1 time because of water damage but the replacement has lasted for 2yrs. All my other devices work great and no issues whatsoever.

Chances are you'll likely have an issue with software updates or apps going haywire before you have a problem with the Galaxy S5 hardware externally or internally. Hope this helps.

By the way my brother has the HTC M8, excellent phone, although you can't change the battery.

the only real problem I've ever encountered with Samsung phones and longevity, besides the battery finally wearing out/ down (but thankfully being easily & cheaply replaced) was the power button wearing out.
on the phones up to the s4 it was a fairly easy fix I could even do it myself. The S5 might prove to be a little bit tougher since it's fairly well sealed against moisture.
Not a deal breaker at all, but its my only concern...
