Life on Verizon in an unlocked Android world isn't as painful as it used to be

Definitely with the recent nexus and mxpe working on Verizon, it gives people more options

Having non Verizon branded devices can also be problematic... But that's a different topic.

It is nice to see people getting more options for phones while being able to keep their Verizon coverage :).

But all of the newer budget phones are all GSM. Even the Moto G 3rd gen isn't available to verizon customers. So its still quite restrictive compared to at&t and t-mobile

Not counting the discounted price of the Nexus 6, the barrier to entry is still pretty high.

It will be interesting to see how the Axon plays out, if people have a hard time activating them if they do not already have a sim, or if verizon will activate them right away.
