'Light bleed only on home screen'

So this is wierd, I wander if anyone else sees this....on my 5" pixel 2, when I have black wallpaper there appears to be light bleed at the top of my screen, but only on the home screen. Seeing this gives me the impression it's a hardware issue, light bleed. The problem is though, if the screen is black at the top of the phone in any other screen this light bleed effect is gone.

In further testing the light bleed effect is on the home screen in the pixel launcher and flick launcher but not nova or action launcher.....

Anyone have any idea what is going on? I want to use my black wallpapers and have a dark theme but this light bleed effect is putting me off

Re: 'Light bleed only on he screen'

Ok so typo in the title it's meant to say 'light bleed only on home screen' not sure how to fix it

Re: 'Light bleed only on he screen'

These are OLED screens, there is no backlight. Any chance you could take a pic? Does it show up on a screen grab?

I had this problem too as did (do) others. I returned my Pixel 2 last week. On black home screen and especially the lock screen, there's a weird effect where half of the screen is bright / not black. It looks like backlight bleed is the best way I'd describe it, not sure it actually is bleed though. It went away as soon as I brought up a solid black web page or within an app. And then once I was back onto the home screen it came back. Also occurred within Amazon Music app. I haven't seen any response from Google about this issue or the black crush issue. I reported it and Google said they'd pass to engineering. If you can live with it great, for me I expect a perfect screen and no black crush for $750. I tried the Oreo color app that people mentioned last week (can't remember name of it, but it expands color gamut I think). This app did not resolve my issues.

When you mentioned the top half of the lock screen being brighter my first thought was that we had different issues. Sure enough I set a black wallpaper, checked my lock screen, and same thing. This is annoying I've already had to swap over my phone. Since it's only on some screens is there a chance it's only software? Would it be worth a factory reset?

You mean bleed is impossible? I thought so too since it didn't appear on every screen, hence this post :)
Bleed is impossible because by definition light bleed is light 'bleeding' through the LCD, which causes discoloration on the sceen. For example, LCD creates blacks by the liquid crystal blocking the backlight. No light = black. However, in cases of imperfect blocking, light still shines through the crystal, creating gray instead of black. Sometimes it is most apparent on the edges since light can go around the crystal blocking there, where you can clearly see the backlight still illuminating the surface of the screen.

On an AMOLED this is impossible because each pixel is basicall a small light bulb. To create blacks, the light bulb is off. No light = no bleed. Also, since they're their own light source, light can't bleed around it because it IS the light.

Reg Pixel 2 just did a test set lock screen to BLK wallpaper have aod touch to wake on , top half of screen is lighter than bottom with kinda circle effect between them, if you put your finger on the bottom of the screen and pull up this affect pulls up the screen and minimizes the clock or aod display and unlocks the screen after you pull up far enough (didn't know you could do that just learned)
Changed wallpaper to Black and turned off aod totally, lock screen is totally black then.

To add I'm not saying you're not seeing anything. I'm saying there's probably something, but it's not light bleed.

Wait a sec. So you're saying that if you turn off 'always on display' the issue is gone? For example I used the black wallpaper with live earth on both the lock screen and home screen. As stated above, half of the lock screen was bright / not black. Also top of home screen was bright.

You are saying that if you turn off AOD then the live earth wallpaper / any other black wallpaper when displayed as lock screen, is now totally black as it should be?

I returned my Pixel 2 last week so I can't try this. If this is true I would love to re buy it. Also wondering if this fixes the black crush? Maybe that's too much to ask lol...

I've tried different wallpapers, and as mentioned before the light bleed is not there when using nova launcher and action launcher. So I'm certain it's not the wallpaper

What is everyone's advice? I guess it's just software so maybe it will be fixed next update? Should I try a factory reset? Or ring google and see if I can swap the phone?

I turned off always on display and the issue was still the same. Black wallpaper, Top of lock screen faded, top of screen on home screen looks like it has light bleed. Any other screen with black background completely black

Ok, so update. I tried resetting my phone and this didn't fix the issue.

I called google customer service and the guy on the phone said he is not aware of this type of issue on the pixel 2, but he said he is aware of a few cases where it has happened on other devices. He believes it is a software issue and said he will pass it on to the technicians and it should be addressed in an update. I asked him how long I should give it before I give a follow up call and he said about a week.

Because he said this issue hasn't been reported before it's probably a good idea that any others with the issue report it to they are aware it's not a one off

So hopefully his response is accurate. In the meantime Ill use a non black wallpaper and wait a week or two and see what happens :D

I've noticed the same for dark wallpapers
