Linux Recommendation?

i was wondering what you recommend for a LInux Distro?

i have been using a cracked version of Windows 7 and recently i got the not Genuine message. i really don't care to bother recracking. so what do you recommend? i have used Ubuntu in the past (10.10 and 12.10) but what other options are there?

There are literally dozens of distros to choose from. Ubuntu is probably the easiest to learn, but I prefer Slackware. It has a steeper learning curve, but you have much more control, and it's wicked fast.

Linux mint 12. Very user friendly. Can feel like a windows interface if you want it to with the new gnome...

EDIT: Try Ubuntu first, then try Linux mint so you can see how much better mint is.

i used Ubuntu before, 10.10 was my daily driver for a few months. I used 12.10 for a couple weeks as well. its not my first time with Linux

I'm honestly contemplating swapping my ubuntu partition to linux mint 12, but what features does mint really boast over ubuntu?

Picking a flavor of Linux is so much a matter of personal taste, your best bet is to try several, and see for yourself. I like hardcore distributions that require fairly deep knowledge of how the system works.

For me, choosing Linux mint 12 over Ubuntu was simply a matter of what worked and didn't work. I don't mind having to do a little tweaking with some commands, etc but it just came down to Linux mint's built off of Ubuntu and the interpretation of the system just works better for me. I'm able to use Ubuntu stuff as well as bare Linux stuff. Seems to be a more complete system (and a lot of things are preloaded into the full version, mp3/mp4 support, avi support, etc). I also prefer the "look" of it by default. I don't know anyone who wouldn't choose a stock silver/green theme over orange/purple. Ubuntu is great in it's own respect and its what got me into Linux. I believe I have moved on and this feels like an upgrade. Think XP -> 7.... lol. Flame on.

So what did you pick?!

Im playing with Mint at the moment. Im not very terminal savy and anything i can do to avoid it makes me happy. All of the codecs and extension supports built into the OS is a major plus.


It feels very Ubuntu-ish. log-in screen, software manager. The two bars at top and bottom annoy me though. I would prefer one or the other. Still playing with it. It has some odd lag here and there. Not are quite as new user friendly as Ubuntu but its not im not a new user lol

In all fairness, Win XP was pretty f***in' awesome and stable which is something you can't say about its older brother...Vista :banghead: ... And parts of 7

Perhaps, but 7 to Vista is like XP to ME. When was the last time there was a distro of Linux so bad it became a joke?

As a matter of fact, I could not understand why microsoft is introducing version after version of the same product every now and then. Approximately all of them perform the same functions. However, the greatest problem is each new version occupies more computational resources. That means if you buy the latest version of windows and MS office, you are forced to buy a new laptop. That is ridiculous.

I know this is an old thread, but my top three versions are Ubuntu, Mint and Peppermint. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with Ubuntu 12.04. It's a personal choice.
