I was considering using LiveProfile or something similar like PingChat! or Kik but I am worried that it will drain my battery. Does anyone know if using LiveProfile and other similar apps will suck up my battery?

I haven't used that program specifically, but any program that constantly contacts the server for updates (like a chat client) will definitely use a lot of battery.
I can tell you that kik was a dog on battery life and I've since deleted it. I have liveprofile on my iPod touch 4 and it doesn't seem to hurt the battery there. For some odd reason, I couldn't get it to install on my Epic. Best pseudo-messenger program for Android that doesn't affect the battery is whatsapp. But lately, I find that it delays in sending messages.
I can't speak for other apps but we use push notifications so there is not much going on while it's in the background

Whats App doesn't drain battery much if at all. It depends on how the apps program their process. Whats app sits nicely in the background, but if the app has been designed rather primitively, it will not be as subtle and cause a bit more drain. I haven't used any of those apps, only whats app to communicate to people outside the US for free (awesome!).
