In our phones we have 3 services
Google location services
Standalone GPS services
VZW location services

...why do we have 3? Do we need all 3 checked?
Can anyone break this down for me? Pros/cons? Effects on battery life?

Thanks

VZW uses cell towers to triangulate your location
Stand alone is the actual device GPS unit
Google uses a combination of wifi signals and GPS to determine location.

I keep VZW turned off and everything works great.

Google location services doesn't use battery beyond the app's internet access. It's also the least accurate. It attempts to use wifi signals to identify location.
GPS uses the GPS chip in your phone and is the most accurate, but most power intensive.
VZW uses knowledge of your closest cell tower to determine (its) location. It's best if you don't have a clear line of sight to enough satellites and are not around usable wifi routers.

I leave them all on. Privacy concerns are the main reason to turn them off, especially if you're transporting a body. With this battery, I leave them all on. Apps are pretty good about only turning on the GPS when it's needed.

If your phone is on, why turn off VZW? Unless you're transporting a body, I mean.

Hahaha...I have "people" doing the transporting for me!

Thanks for the info guys

I read somewhere that it uses more battery. It's never hurt me to have it turned off. I don't remember where I read it, but it wasn't for this phone. You're right about this battery. I don't think it would be that big a deal on battery life to leave it on.

I always leave my phone at home when disposing of bodies. It's hard enough without getting interrupted with an annoying call from your wife.

I found an interesting thing regarding these settings on my phone. If I used Google location services alone (the other two off) it usually put me in the general area, but not dead on. If I used Standalone GPS services (the other two off) often it was unable to find my location, or when it did it wasn't too accurate. BUT if I used Google location services AND Standalone GPS services I always got a instant and super accurate location. I have never had VZW location services on, as there is just no need for it (perhaps in very bad weather if the other two didn't work).
