I do this all the time with Textra and other messaging apps.

The problem is that I have face unlock and the phone will unlock itself whenever I am in the middle of reading messages on my lock screen. It would be even more annoying if that happens to me while I was responding to messages and I lost anything I had already typed.

I turned off my face unlock and tried giving it a shot. After running the adb command it is still asking me to unlock before I can reply. I followed the instructions exactly and got my device serial when running ADB device command so I know it was connected. Any idea what I could be missing?

I see better what your mean now. I tested the process myself and see it is impossible to reply when the phone is securely locked. I guess you're only option, then, is to use Smart Lock settings to keep you're device unlocked in order to reply from the lock screen. I use home location and my smartwatch to keep my phone unlocked.
