Locked out forgot alternative password HELP!!

Had my phone in my pocket today and it ended up locking the screen and sending me to the alternative password entry, which I have forgotten. I have been online to the Android Device Manager and Locked my phone, and put a code on screen (which came up no problem) but it won't accept the new password, I don't know what else to do
