Long term ownership of Note 8

So I've had the phone on TMobile jump since last September and I'm a bit torn on it. I've been jumping from pixel 2xl to essential and back to note 8 and cannot decide which of the 3 to keep. I plan on keeping any of them for at least 2-3 years and have been contemplating the longevity of the note 8, moreso than the other 2 as Samsung is notorious for sending out delayed updates (if any at all).

What are your thoughts on the longevity of the note 8 as well as the ability to receive updates on a consistent basis? I think I might just pay off the note 8 and be done with all of it, not too sure at this point.

The note 8 is future proof so to speak. Updates are and will always be slow. I don't really care about the updates.

I'm a hard core note fan. I would pick the Note 8 hands down. I think it is a long term use phone as long as you take care of it. I see updates going to it for at least 2 years.

I think that would be sufficient. I just wish Samsung were a little more transparent about their commitment to continue sending updates to their devices

I've been switching phones for the last two years and the note 8 is the only phone I've kept longer than a couple months. It's got the performance, display and it will be very capable and relevant for at least two or three years.

Do you plan on switching to another device anytime soon?

2 major OS updates. So note 8 will get Android O and P. Security updates will probably stretch to 3 years but 2 years for sure.

That's all. It's simple and don't expect anything more.

I bought the Note 8 with longevity in mind. I take good care of my phones and I don’t have the disposable income to slap down hundreds of dollars on a flagship every year. Between my LG V20 with its swappable battery and the Note, I hope I won't have the need to purchase another phone anytime soon.

I'd never expect to keep the Note 8 more then a year. I'm the phone will be outdated soon because of the lack of updates Samsung has.

Samsung still rolls out security patches in about the same time frame as everyone else. I still don't get the obsession with people needing the latest Android build as soon as it comes out. Just because the essential and Pixel receives stock android updates sooner doesn't mean it can do more. There's so much more in the Samsung updates than in stock android.
As long as you keep this is mind and block out the external noise, this phone is fine for the long haul.
If you absolutely need the fastest phone and best camera, you'll never be satisfied with any phone more than 6 months.

the pixel is the clear choice if your primary concern is having the updates fastest.

The essential i would be leary of considering they have only sold around 80,000 units and they are a new company they could fold at any time. Not that you shouldn't buy it just speaking in terms of longevity it is a gamble.

The note 8 is a great device and my note 5 still worked perfectly until i got my note 8. if you know what to strip out of the note it will be good.

you have selected 3 good phones depending what is important to you is where i would focus.

I'm currently using the Pixel 2xl and am getting increasingly used to it. Still have my note 8 and there's a few things I know I'll miss about it but the pixel 2xl is checking more boxes at the moment.

Depends if you really use all the Note has to offer.

If you do, well your decision is made.

If not and you prefer to have fast updates, your decision is made as well.

That's good. You have to be comfortable with your device and how you use it only you will know for sure. The pixel 2 is a great device also. For me the Note hits more boxes that I'm interested in.

and trust me... this isn't easy for someone who has had every note since the note 2

That's a really interesting statement coming from a Note user. I have only peeked at the Pixel 2 XL in Best Buy. Can you maybe keep both and have your Note 8 as a backup

I can understand your hesitation and also your preoccupation with all three devices: they definitely offer up different experiences and have excellent benefits to owning that specific device.

Though Samsung may be iffy with updates, I'd say you are in the best position to either hold onto that or the Pixel 2 XL. Not that I don't love the Essential Phone (I do!); but Google has promised two years' warranty on their phones and is always pushing updates. The Essential 2 is apparently on the way though, so it looks like they're gonna be going strong!

But yeah, I'd say either the Samsung or Pixel phones would be the best choices for longevity.

Not really, I never used the stylus despite always having one amd I personally feel there's much to appreciate about stock Android and how efficient it can be without all the bells and whistles.

Im giving either one to my father as his note 4 is increasingly aging.
