I switched to the N4 9 days ago from an iPhone 5 and wanted to share my experiences and thoughts on the two platforms in case there are others contemplating a similar switch. I've been very pleased so far. Im not a huge tech nerd... just an average joe trying to post some experiences for other average joes contemplating making the jump. I tend to switch phones a lot... my wife says I have a problem... I just like new toys to play with every few months or so.

A little history about my phone usage... I've primarily been an iphone user since day one. I would occasionally switch back to a Blackberry (9700 and 9900) throughout the years but always ended up back on the iPhone. I wasn't dissatisfied with the iPhone 5, actually quite the contrary. I love the iPhone 5.... Especially the hardware. I could take or leave a bigger screen, so that wasnt a huge issue for me. Software wise... I was just bored. I've tried Android on a couple of different occasions but never could commit and returned both the HTC One and Galaxy S3 within the return window. I wasn't happy with the software that was currently running at the time with the HTC One (primarily Sense), it just seemed to lag for me on a regular basis. In my opinion it wasn't up to par with iOS in terms of smoothness in day to day useage. Im not quite sure why... it just didnt feel right. I wasn't a big fan of the S III either. I wasn't satisfied with the plasticky nature of the phone and not a fan of the samsung skin either. I probably didn't give that one a fair shot either because I was thrilled with the new iPhone 5 i had. I decided I was going to try the Nexus 4 a few weeks ago. I told myself that running pure android along with the great build quality of the device could romance me into a long term relationship. I even insured I was going to give it a fair shot by giving away my iphone before the Nexus even arrived. Like it or not, I was going to be an android user for at least 6 months.

The phone arrived a week after ordering. I was instantly a fan of the build quality. Ive always preferred glass over plastic and (knock on wood) have always used my iphones without a case and have never broken one (unlike my wife..... I digress... Cases are better for some than others). Im sure I just mega jinxed myself though... I did things a little different this time... Instead of trying to turn my Nexus into an iphone I was going to appreciate the differences and nuances of Android and change my usage patterns to the phone instead of trying to turn my phone into something it wasn't.

Things I like...

Keyboard (switching between swiftkey and stock keyboard) - this is one of the things Ive enjoyed the most. Ive adopted using swype (especially when only one hand is available) and I love the predictive choices the software throws up on the screen as I type. I can't emphasize this enough. I really like the keyboards in comparison to the iPhone. They just work better for me.

Jelly bean 4.2 - ive found the software to be on par or better than iOS 6. I love the overall snappiness of day to day usage. When I switched in the past I was never satisfied in this regard.

Notifications - I love the pull down bar. I can pull down to see my SMS or emails even when the phone is locked. I love this feature. I never used the notification center much in iOS, Im not sure why, the android implementation just seems to work better.

Phone - the phone app is more enoyable to use. I like how my "favorites" are displayed with their pictures when I open the app and underneath are my most contacted which also seems to add to quick calling experiences.

Quick Settings - I turn my wifi on and off many times throughout the day. It is easier and quicker to tap the widget instead of drilling down into the settings app on my iPhone.

Widgets - I really like being able to see the weather on my screen or sports scores. I also use a battery meter which tells me how much battery is left. I know I could turn the percentage on with my iphone but for some reason on some days it really bothers me to be front and center. I can put the widget one home screen over so it isnt always in my face but is convenient to see with one swipe over. I would ultimately end up turning the battery percentage off on my iphone and end up drilling down into settings to see how much battery I have left.

Apps - I am a big pandora one user. So much so that I dont even store music on my phone. I use it every time im in the car. During past phone switches it was my experience that the android version didnt work as well, it would freeze while changing songs and I would have to quit the app and start over. This hasnt happened as much this time. I still think the Pandora iOS app is better but it is a lot closer now. SCORE app - I use this app a lot for sports scores. I have actually found the android version to be more enjoyable to use than the iOS counterpart. It sounds simple.. but it seems prettier and works quicker IMO. I also use iheart radio a lot to listen to a sports radio station i like and have found it to be quicker than the iOS version also.

Auto App updates - speaks for itself. Its awesome I dont have to update each app manually. Click the auto update box and never waste time updating. The apps just update in the background. I would have at least 2 or 3 apps to update every day and its annoying on iOS.

Maps and navigation - I prefer the Android versions. I had google maps installed on my iphone but I like this one better.

Battery Settings - I really like being able to see what is using my battery and how much time my phone has been off the charger. This is awesome.

Not so good ....

Battery Life - Not quite as good as iPhone 5. It is really important to me that I can make it through a full day. Some days it lasts, but more often than not Im looking for a charger in the late afternoon. I would obviously prefer a bigger battery. I wouldnt describe the battery life as bad, and it has actually been better than what i expected but still wish the battery was a little big bigger.

Camera - Its just not as good as the iPhone 5. This bothers me because I take lots of pics of my young children and feel like i'm missing opportunities to get some great shots sometimes.

Picture syncing - I loved how easy it was to store my pics in iphoto from my camera and I miss photo stream. I've worked around this somewhat by auto loading my pics to dropbox where I can then easily import them into iphoto or share to photostream from my ipad mini every night. I miss being able to see pics my family and friends upload to photostream throughout the day and now only see them on my ipad at night. I knew this would be the case when I switched to the Nexus but didn't think I was as hooked on photostream as I had become. If I switch back to an iphone this will be the primary reason.

Storage - I need more, but I knew that going in so this isn't a surprise. Ive been trying to use dropbox to bridge the gap. Maybe this will turn into a positive at some point... time will tell

]Good and Bad[/B]

Notifications - This suprised me.. but I actually enjoy not having a pop up on my screen when a notification comes in. Ive turned off any notifications for email and have a beep for incoming text messages. This has helped me not waste time opening the email app just to erase the red number thing on the app avatar on my home screen. This bothered me at first but really like not seeing numbers on the app that I have to go delete within the app. One of my biggest problems with the N4 is not being able to hear the incoming text message dings or phone ringer at max volumes. I simply can't hear my phone ring or beep in a busy place. The speaker sucks on the nexus... I wish I had the ability to increase the volume to a more audible level.

iMessage - I dont miss this and I thought I would. I have unlimited texts through my plan so it doesnt matter to me if the message is classified as data useage or a sms. I would sometimes have problems with iMessages going through when I was in bad cellular data area but have never had a problem using SMS. I've enjoyed using the messaging app on my N4

I could probably keep going but will stop because this is long enough already and my main likes and dislikes are above. I knew going in that I probably wouldn't care for the things I dislike, so I cant complain too much. What has been nice are the things Ive liked. I didnt know I would like them till I switched and continue to find these things the more and more I use my phone. I hope this helps someone contemplating a similar switch. I'm gonna stick with this phone for at least 6 months so maybe I will update this some as I go.

Nice job on the review of features and welcome to android and the Nexus 4!

Longtime android user and have owned the N4 since right before new years. My daily driver is the Note 2 and I usually switch to the N4 on Friday thru Sunday so have not really had a full picture of battery life, camera or storage due to light usage on the weekends.

I brought my Nexus 4 on spring break vacation with me for the week and have been using it as my daily driver since Sunday. I have to back the OP on the observations regarding the battery, camera and storage. I do not know how anyone except a very light user can make it a full day without topping off. Luckily I have a portable battery and will need it when using my N4 outside of the weekend. I have also been taking a lot of pics of the family etc and the camera is just not up with the Note 2 and other cameras on flagship devices. I have also been uploading pictures and video to box (free 50gb). I also have drive and dropbox, but am more convinced now that local storage is better. Yes the cloud is fine, but it is slow etc. Maybe box is slow but when on WiFi I have been uploading 10 to 15 pictures at a time to box, and it takes several minutes each time. (So glad I have a 64 GB card in my Note 2. It just makes it easier).

Having said all of that I still love my Nexus 4! I think I have it niched perfectly for my usage and that is a weekend type device, at least for me. I will enjoy the quick updates etc and will probably try to always have the latest Nexus phone. It is the right size and has all the features anyone really needs when I do not want to or need to carry my Note 2. Not to mention I love google wallet! I have been using it a bunch this week!

Great review overall. I just have some suggestions as far as the negative points go.

Battery Life - Not quite as good as iPhone 5. It is really important to me that I can make it through a full day. Some days it lasts, but more often than not Im looking for a charger in the late afternoon. I would obviously prefer a bigger battery. I agree that these are weak points of the Nexus series and need to be improved on. If you haven't downloaded the 4.2.2 update, do so now, as it is known to improve battery life substantially.

Storage - I need more, but I knew that going in so this isn't a surprise. Ive been trying to use dropbox to bridge the gap. Maybe this will turn into a positive at some point... time will tell

I suggest you download Box, a similar cloud storage service. I used to use Dropbox but have since switched to Box for the sole reason that they currently have a promotion that is going on until the end of 2013 in which you can get 50GB of storage for life, absolutely free, if you download the app on an LG device (this includes the Nexus 4).

I use the amazon cloud app. I have it set to automatically upload to the cloud. Its very attractive and I can view my photos instantly on the tablet or PC(which coincidentally is also my TV). Just snap it, and take a look on a real screen. :-)

Windows 8 + Splashtop on a tablet is a winning combo FYI. All the native gestures seem to be in the tablet. Windows app store and OS is a little new and under developed but with chrome web apps, and some assistance customizing windows to your standards. I hide my keyboard and mouse and its been a fun experience. I suggest you try that out next. Cancel your cable TV and force yourself to go 100% internet. Between Netflix, hulu, crackle, movie2k, Amazon prime, and others there's plenty of content there. You just have to find it.

I plan to make phone calls via Skype from my couch before too long. Love tech. :-)

From what I have seen and read on other forums myself included the N4 seems to have attracted a lot of long time iPhone users. Stock android, quick updates and no carrier crap are really appealing to people coming from the iPhone. I don't know why some of the lesser manufacturers don't use stock more and ditch there own skin

If your family and friends are already invested in the photostream ecosystem, then you're right - there's just no way around this problem. On the other hand you can turn on G+ syncing, which will do something similar with Google plus. The problem, as I'm sure you're well aware, is that practically no one uses G+ :)

Good review for anyone thinking of making the switch!

Battery: it seems many android phones have a hard time matching iPhones. I think a large portion of that is the screen size on android devices, along with shrinking form factors.
Camera: I have never had an iPhone so can't speak to the quality agrument but I find I miss less opportunities with my N$ compared to my old phone because of the ease and speed of camera loading. Just swipe right from the lockscreen!

iOS is still better than Android in terms of touch screen response, general smoothness and refinement. and batt life.
Android is better in almost every other facet.

^ LOL according to you that really doesn't leave much.

This current Iphone4 guy is on the "ledge" All I have to do is hit the "Accept and Buy" button!

Much like the reviewer, I can't gripe about the iPhone. I love iDevices, however, I'm so bored of IOS. It's become so boring and expected, I can't remember the last time I was excited for an IOS update. Like most iPhone users I play the, "I MUST MAKE ALL THE RED CIRCLES GO AWAY!" game. That's pretty much my only reason for ever updating, I think I'm ready for the Android leap of faith. The only thing really stopping me is:

1. Camera (I love taking pictures of my daughter on the fly, hopefully the camera surprises me.)
2. Storage (With 50GB of storage on Box this really isn't to big of an issue)
3. Change (I feel old now)

I use G+ and have met lots of nice people on it. Once you form some good connections it's very lively, and the tight integration with your nexus 4's photo album, and the auto-uploading, is an excellent plus. I think it's a bit of a myth that not many people use it. I've got way more people interacting with me on G+ than on Facebook or Twitter combined.

Back to the OP, I really love how seamlessly your photos and albums get backed up with G+ if you enable that feature, and that tight integration works really well. Recently they updated things so it's even better. Worth a try IMO, even if only for the free auto-backup of your photos.

Coming from iOS I actually missed not having the little red #'s & was quite disappointed that most Apps only allowed it for SMS / Calls / GMail!
As such, I was very pleased when I figured out a way to achieve it for virtually ALL Apps using Nova Launcher & MissedIt.

if we're comparing device to device, the ip5 camera is better than the n4.

i completely understand what you mean by being bored of iOS. there's only so much excitement you can muster for additional rows of icons, lol.
but to be fair, android updates are mostly about fixing stuff. like the dreaded BT/wifi issues, batt life, hoping it will one day be as smooth as iOS (and no, project butter still doesn't compare to iOS).

only the major OS updates bring something new to the table like Google Now.
toggles are new to stock Android but have been around for awhile in custom ROMs and that's where the real excitement is. what the 3rd party devs come up with is what makes android stand head and shoulders above iOS.

The camera is pretty good and probably above average as far as current phones go. It just isn't outstanding.

Yeah the Nexus drew me in as a previous iPhone user

Crackberry running similar post about Android and iPhone switched to BB10, :)

Anyway, yeah, I had three back to back blackberry's ended with the torch9810, I loved the BB but got sorely exhausted waiting for a modern smart phone. When I read about the Nexus 4 and the total super reviews, no one dissed the Nexus 4, quality, price, JellyBean, Quad Core, Gorilla Glass. I'm terribly happy with the Nexus 4, now, will I ever go back to BB? If they are around in two years (the time I expect to be happy with my Nx4) and I have a chance to try one out, especially how the browser works, and if more third party stuff comes to BB10 such as FireFox, I must see the same Apps which I end up with on Jelly Bean to even think of going back, I felt left out, so many options just not there, was tired of seeing so and so having an App for Iphone and android but none for BB. At first I hated leaving my physical keyboard but thanks to some prior hands on with swype on a Xoom, quickly learned to love JellyBeans swype like keyboard action. I own a Playbook and await the release of an updated OS which will perhaps mirror the BB10 UI and browser. I was sooo fed up with the BB browser checkered blue screen when the page typically didn't load fast enough or loaded but as you scrolled the browser didn't keep up and there it was, checker blue, gag! It really was the browser mainly the made me want to change and just simply fed up with waiting, waiting, waiting for BB10. Right now, I love my Nexus4!!!!!!!!!

This would have been easier to read with paragraphs and punctuation.

I would have been more hesitant to make the jump if I didn't have an iPad. The iPad n4 combo gives you best of both worlds. Make the jump... I'm very happy to of finally found a great device that allows me to experiment with android. I'm really liking my n4 and not missing iPhone
