Well, that question mark is probably not much of one. I'm fairly certain I'll be heading to Android.
Basically, I've been a webOS users since the Sprint Pre launched, have been very involved with the community, mostly on Twitter, where I go by the same moniker (although I may have to create a new one for Android), participated in developer events, but never developed any apps (I'm a web developer by profession). It's been a tumultuous couple of years and the only reason I still have a webOS device is that I got a free Pre2 when I attended the NYC Dev Day back last fall and was able to, with the help of a fellow webOS fan, able to swap my Sprint Pre's com board into the Pre2, thus making it a "FrankenPre" and worlds better than the sluggish Pre "Minus."
I prefer Sprint to other carriers for a variety of reasons, and I have a family account with multiple phones (including my inlaws) which terminate at different times, so my ability to switch to a different carrier is limited financially if not by choice. We've had no info on whether Sprint will be carrying the Pre3, but the buzz in the community is that it's not likely, at least not when it initially comes out this summer. And the prospect of waiting for yet another 6+ months is daunting to say the least. Not just that, but all the waiting, fumbles, and just lack of support for webOS has beaten me down over the last year to a point where I'm just exhausted!
So, I am here trying to glean some basics and eventually some more advanced tips and tricks from a site that I'm sure will be incredibly useful (I've been active on PreCentral and TreoCentral before that - got my account I think 7 years ago??). It seems like a mountain of stuff to learn, all a bit overwhelming. I searched for some books, but there doesn't seem to be any generic Android books, although a few for specific devices. I've also looked for video tutorials, and while I've found some here or there for various things, there doesn't seem to be a good centralized spot for Android newbie primers that get you from zero to at least a moderate understanding of how things work, very useful utilities, etc., the way there is with text on this site. Can you tell I'm lazy about reading?
The other thing to know is that I currently own an Android device - a Vzn HTC Droid Eris that is a loaner from a startup company that a friend of mine is heading and whom I'm doing some work for. Obviously I can only tweak this phone so much. No rooting to say the least, and I'm not going to buy any apps until I have a device of my own. I've been told not to use the Eris as an example of Android since it is old and crappy
But at least I have something I can actually get knowledgeable about Android with.
So, that leaves me with which Android device to buy as my future phone. Since I'm with Sprint, I have a few choices of what's currently available, but I figure that I will wait for one of the two upcoming phones I know about, the Nexus S, which should be available in just 9 days, or the HTC Evo 3D. I'm leaning heaving toward the Evo 3D because it has so much processing power, a bigger screen, and the 3d capabilities. However, there's no pricing info on it yet and I'm doubtful that it will be the same $200 as the Nexus S, not that I currently have an excess $200 to spend on a new phone now! My hope is to get my friend with the startup to take his Eris back and pay for all (or even part) of my next phone
Other than phone stuff, as I mentioned, I'm a web developer whose also done a bit of application development (C# and VB.net), so eventually if time permits I'd love to make some apps for Android as well as WP7. I live in Northern VA, about 20 minutes from DC, but was born and raised in NYC, and go back there at least a few times a year mostly to visit family. I have a 5-year-old daughter, and other than my technical interests, have gotten more recently (over the last 10 years) into gardening, sustainable living/farming/eating, paleo/low-carb eating, etc. Also I'm a big audio book (via Audible.com) and podcast listener.
Hope to meet many of you here and hopefully on Twitter as well. (my current twitter id's are @dvdmon which is mainly webOS-related, and @leviwallch which is everything BESIDES webOS
I guess I should ask here if there are some Twitter lists of good people/companies (Android related I mean) on Twitter?
Thanks!
Levi
