So I've been doing some research on the Nook Color, seems to be pretty legit tablet for 250 bucks. Problems I'm seeing are speed and performance, is this a huge issue once rooted to a non B&N form of android?
Also, apps and their stability/compatibility. Are most of the typical android apps on say cm7 (I guess thats the most stable?) work correctly on the nook color and perform well. Is sideloading of apps once os is installed easier than getting market place to work?

Does this device once rooted become a decent media device for say typical avi format (non hd) movies/shows and music?

theres a quick way to install market on Honeycomb v4 running from sd, it autoinstalls once you have ADB installed on your PC - once installed you can get majority of apps - ones i can't find i just send to myself using gmail and then install directly from the email on my nook! - for what i paid, the speed is fine (its still faste than my OG droid was!) and stability is better than i expected (and i'm running the unofficial port of honeycomb, once the AOSP is released and it is fully functional, it will be a beast!)

I can only speak of the stock root experience and I safely say its perfectly stable and responsive. Once rooted, its a breeze to install the market and then install most applications that are compatible. Some you may not find but you can easily install them by downloading the .apk

I got one two nights ago. Root was dead simple. It is fast with stock B&N android 2.1 and has been totally stable. I was able to get all of the apps I was looking for on it except Swype. My only real complaint is 2.1. I have gotten used to 2.2 on my Droid Inc and going back to 2.1 sucks.

As far as running other versions versions off of SD. I have had mixed results.

Honeycomb install was no problem and I really like it. I can't wait to it is further along but my experience thus far is limited app support, minor bugs and at times slow. Fun to play with but can't use it full time.

Nookie Froyo has been trouble for me so far. I first installed it and it was very slow and I had download issues as others have reported. I followed most of the tips and it didn't get much better so I got a faster SD card. With the new SD card I am running into an issue where after boot to Nookie Froyo a lot of apps force close. I am troubleshooting that right now and may have a different opinion shortly.

One side note of importance. I was not able to get rooted B&N to be seen by Sideload wonder machine or ADB. I have played with a number of drivers. While running the SD based versions it sees it no problem. This could be just me, not sure, but I gave up on troubleshooting that problem.

Good luck,
