I have been an ios webos and a windows guy.
I consider myself a power user.

I wanted to try Android and see if I wanted to switch or stick with IOS when the new phones come out in by the end of the year.

I would only keep this phone for 6 months or less then I would get a current version phone.

I am on AT&T

In the mean time I want to get a used android (no contract) in the $100-$150 range to try it out.

I know I won't get anything top of the line nowadays but could I get something with a somewhat newer version of the OS and at least a 4.7" screen and current custom Rom support?
I just don't want it to be real slow where I will not get the Android experience if I had bought a new phone.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

why not buying a Moto G unlocked? or even a Moto E?

surely, you'll either get a 4.5" or 4.3" screen BUT you'll be getting the latest version of Android on both phones and what is best: it's pure Android!

i think they're both good and cheap phones for those who want to try out Android! and i guarantee you the experience on this phones will be really smooth and fluid! well, i can talk for the G at least, since i already owned one...then moved on to the X! but still, the G left a really good impression on me, that you can have a good, fast budget phone! also, i must say, G screen is the best i ever seen on a budget :0

I know I am asking for a lot with the budget I am asking for but was hoping for something closer at the 4.7" and hopefully with a micro SD slot.

I always had small screens and know for sure I would want at least a 4.7" -5.5" for the new phone I would be getting in the next 6 months or so.

I was hoping to find something now in the 4.7" range to see if that is the size I would stick with later on.

Maybe a used S3? It's getting KitKat but that will probably be it's last update.

I think a used S3 or something comparable will do. If it were me, I'd go with the Moto E simply because of the price and nice piece of hardware that you get. Yes, it doesn't meet your criteria, but I'll give you a good glimpse into Android.

Let us know what you decide on getting.

I would go with a used S3 like others have mentioned and put nova prime on it for a launcher.

Isn't an unlocked moto g only like $70 on amazon right now?

All I see them for is 199. I see a new version is coming out on June 3rd. Will the old model drop anymore soon or is it at it's dropped point with the announcement of the new model?

Used s3 might be your best bet.. Great phone for $150

I to am thinking of the S3 but I don't see them for 150. The cheapest I see them is for 200 (16gb) in good condition from a reputable seller.

That is only the Verizon variant.

The new Moto G will have 4G and an SD slot. Might be worth it to wait and spend a few extra $$. While the S3 is getting KK now (I think), the Moto G will probably give you a better idea of what Android can do. Does 0.3" screen space make THAT big a difference especially when they have the same resolution meaning a higher PPI on the smaller screen? Even better, a Moto X is a GREAT example of a powerful device with nice add-ons from the manufacturer but no overpowering overlay, too bad it doesn't fit your budget.

how about an lg optimus g. it's got the same innards as a nexus 4 i'm told...has an external sd card slot... very slick. i got a new one of 150 not too long ago. very easy to root and install a custom recovery.

4.7 screen.

i'd imagine you could find a used one on ebay for cheap.

I highly advise getting a LG Optimus g.... Decent screen and the same specs and nexus 4 put a rom on it and boom instant awesome

HTC hd2/Leo. It can run a custom 4.4 KK. Case closed.

I have the s3 and moto g which I got for $70. Performance wise, the Moto g blows the s3 out of the water. Obviously my moto g is the older one without sd card and internal memory is 5.5gb free, so not a good option if you need lots of internal memory. Though the new moto g should work better with sd card support in that regard.

Does anyone know if the new Moto G will have a 16gb version or larger released soon?

All I see is the 8gb version
