Hello All,

Well, I've given up on ATT and Samsung getting there act together on the 2.2 roms for US Captivates so looking into going to a custom rom.

Problem is, I have not found a single place the plainly describes what each available rom has or doesn't have. I'm an engineer so yes, I could eventually do all the reading and research to learn exactly what all the different 8350JIHL based, LAGGY Fix, STROM KERNL, etc... stuff means, but wanted to know if there was a nice clean list somewhere I just haven't managed to find. Something simple that lists high-level stuff like what I'm looking for:

Rom based on Froyo 2.2.1 (US or Rogers Captivate Leak/release)
Release status: Stable
Fully stock including touchwiz, etc (I like touchwiz, and want ATT Hotspots, but don't care about any other ATT software).
Includes working Bluetooth/wifi/USB tethering/hotspot

So, is this list something I'm going to have to create, does someone already know of a ROM that meets my needs, or am I just going to have to learn how to build my own custom rom?

Thanks for any help, advice, or direction pointing.

Like noted above, you may want to load the stock Froyo leak-

I897UCJI6 - FROYO - for real - xda-developers

This has all the ATT stuff in there still.

There are two custom ROMs that strive to maintain the stock look 'n feel, Cognition and Perception. Neither will have ANY ATT software on it however... though you could probably easily enough add the ATT hotspot if you wanted to.

Both of the custom ROMs will run significantly faster.

[ROM] ★ Cognition v3.04 ★ Video Review - xda-developers
[ROM] ★ Perception Build 10.3 ★ Video Review - xda-developers

I'll throw a vote in for Andromeda again. I've got it on two phones that were stock. Andromedarom.weebly.com has a one page how to with the necessary links. Don't need to change kernels or modem or anything. It is Captivate based 2.2. Haven't had a single issue in over two weeks and the gps always locks in now within 15 seconds. Flashed it on, restored phone contacts and that's it.

Ah, good question, but where is there a stock Froyo for a US Captivate that's ready to be flashed? I haven't managed to find one, unless your talking stock as in from Google, then I've got drivers to get, touchwiz, etc, which means I might want to start looking at building my own rom.

I started going through the ROM reviews, but though nice looking Video reviews are a horribly slow way of getting information. No easy way to skip to the relevant bits like a quick scan during reading. I'm still slowly going through the post reviews, but they seem to be scattered about.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Ah, I replied to slow, didn't see your post while I was composing. Cool, this looks like my best starting point. Thanks!

I'll look into these as well, though I do make a lot of use out of the free ATT Hotspot access which will be a must add. And strangely, I actually like TouchWiz, which seems to be one of the first things to go on so many custom ROMS. I thought I had read that Cognition and Perception but stripped that out.

I've been on Cognition 3.04 for three weeks and I'm happy. If AT&T released their version I would likely not run it. I may try it for a week just for grins. I did try Perception 10.3 and a few others for a day, but prefer Cognition.

The first time to load Cognition and follow all the directions it took about 4 hours. The next weekend I went back to stock AT&T, then tried a few other ROM's. That took just 20 minutes to load a new ROM. Then Sunday, back to Cognition. I've not had any problems with WiFi, BlueTooth, Battery, Voice. I did have a problem with the GPS... It found 8 or so Sat's while I was sitting on my couch! It was FAST! No GPS hardware issue for me, it was a software issue!

It's like riding a bike, once you get the hang of it, it's easy.

It's much more fun trying new roms, than it is worrying about when AT&T is going to release their version.

Smurph!

Thanks everyone, I actually used the odin one click yesterday evening and flashed the stock 2.2 att rom to my phone. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Re-installed all my apps i cared about and synced my data back on. It's not perfect (may root and go with a lag fix), but I've got all my tether options back, and now i don't have to put the thing into USB debug mode just to use it as mass-storage on my Macbook pro. Flash seems to have installed no problem.
