Looking to root and run CM7

I know there is a ton of links posted here, as well as in the XDA forums, but I wanted to see if maybe I could get all those links in one consolidated place. I am not rooted, nor have I ever rooted Android before (I have always used iphone), I read the stickied forum up above on how to root, but further in it says that method doesn't work as well as another. My whole thing is I want the root to work, and not have issues down the line, or at the time I root.

- As for questions, when I root my phone will it erase the firmware on my phone? For instance, when you JB an iPhone it injects the exploit, and adds Cydia, but everything else stays like it was before the JB.

- Is it possible to unroot a phone (and go back to the stock original firmware that came with the phone), I have read all over that rooting voids the warranty, so just weighing my options.

- Finally, is rooting and adding a custom ROM really worth losing the manufactures warranty? I read great things about CM7, but does it really make that huge of a difference?

OFC I am using a SGII AT&T, any help would be appreciated.

You can reverse the rooting as far as I know. Just flash back the stock rom and kernel.

As for CM7, I tried it today and I preferred the stock Samsung rom... i just might compile and build the stock android rom when ICS source is released (and android.git.kernel.org is working).
