I just got a new galaxy s9. I had previously had an s8. I did the complete smart switch and everything transferred as it should. I am giving the old s8 to my daughter and wanted to delete some of the photos in the gallery albums. As I started to do so, I noticed that they are then being deleted from my new s9 as well. I am assuming that this is a back up issue of some sort? I love just having the photos in the gallery rather than a storage location. I do use google photos. Is that my best option? Also back up everything that transferred over to the cloud and then begin deleting from the old phone?

It sounds as if you had them in Google Photos, not in the phone. If you change the Google account in the S8, it won't see the pictures any more. (You don't want her reading your email, etc., do you?)
