Losing texts while Epic is locked up

My Epic is generally great but suffers from one of the most annoying issues I've ever experienced in a cell phone.

The thing locks up quite a bit, probably five times a day. That's too much for my liking but I'm willing to live with it because all else considered this is the phone that suits me best.

Here's the problem, sometimes the phone is locked up for hours at a time before I realize it and pull the battery to reset. And any text messages I receive while the phone is locked up are lost. Every phone I've had prior to the Epic will receive text messages that were sent after the phone is reset but not the Epic...

This issue has caused MANY problems for me due to lost texts. And it kinda stresses me out every time I discover my phone has locked up because I have no idea how long it's been locked up and have no idea how many text messages might be lost. Like many of you I am heavily dependent on text messaging for all manner of communication and since I've had an Epic this has become the least reliable means of communication.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Are there any known apps or operating conditions that are known to cause this problem?

TIA for any help!

Ever considered doing a factory reset? I'm assuming your running stock and not rooted.

Yes stock.

Factory reset is rather unpalatable to me. Is there any way to easily back everything up in one shot, including SMS?

But I don't see how a factory reset would solve this problem. I can see a reset reducing the number of lock ups I get, but I don't think it would solve the problem of losing text messages that are delivered while locked up. You think a reset would fix the problem of lost text messages?

I see a factory reset as your only option short of replacing your phone as a fix. This is not a typical issue I have seen anyone experiencing. And as far as backing up your SMS is concerned, you can use "MyBackup Pro" from the "Market".

Bottom line is you shouldn't be having the lock ups in the first place. The factory reset would be to try to fix the problem that is causing them. If your phone is not locking up, no more missed texts. You could also take your phone to a sprint store and explain it to them and have them factory reset it for you.You didn't happen to download the last update they sent out? If so, did it start then?

I had the exact same problem with my epic. After 3 or 4 factory resets didn't fix it, I called support and told them my problem. They started to walk me through the factory reset but I stopped them and said I had done it 3 tines without it helping. They sent me a new phone and I haven't ever had the problem again.

Don't waste your time with the factory reset just call them up and tell them that you tried the reset and just want a new phone.

I thought like you and kept telling myself I was better off dealing with it. I am so happy I finally replaced it and wish I would have replaced it long ago. It really is a very stable phone and much more enjoyable when it doesn't lockup 3 and 4 times a day.

Replace it! You'll be glad you did.

Thank you!

I plan on running the upgrade to froyo today and hope that will solve the problem once and for all. If that doesn't do it I'll take your advice and have the phone replaced.

Curious how you went about transfering all your data to the new phone? My phone isn't rooted and it seems like the best backup programs require you to have a rooted phone.

Mybackup Pro was recommended in this thread but I've read some terrible reviews that don't give me much confidence in it. Any other options for a good backup program that works on a non-rooted phone?

Holy f'n hell!!!!

I upgraded to froyo. I hard reset my phone. I barely have any third party apps installed.

Same problem. Phone locks up and loses texts while it's locked up. And not only that... I just found it locked up and vibrating like crazy. That never happened before. So now on top of the phone having random lock ups and losing text messages it's going to completely kill the battery if it's not plugged in when it locks up.

This phone is an EPIC piece of ****... Unreal. Just completely unreal. I'm actually starting to miss my Treo and that says a lot about how frustrated I am with this hunk of junk!

No. Hardly anybody experiences this.

I replaced my phone and haven't had this happen since. Another user had this kind of problem and when he replaced the phone it stopped happening.

If this is happening to you replace your phone, it is not normal.
