Lost Pics from the Camera Folder

For the second time, I have lost all pictures I've take with this phone that automatically get put in the camera folder. I have camera set to store on SD card. Gone. Can't find in file managers. Anyone have this happen or have an explanation? Or how to get them back? Stock, unrooted.

If you plug your phone into your pc and look in the DCIM folder, are they gone from that?
That's where they should be stored.
