Love the phone! Some initial thoughts

Got the phone today, the 32 GB Graphite variant and so far I love it! Some initial thoughts:

  • I came from the Nexus 6. The 6P feels great in the hand compared to the unwieldy, thick Nexus 6. It's thinner, lighter, and just feels right.
  • The build of the phone is solid; feels like quality material. Overall, it reminds me a lot of the original Droid X, which I like.
  • It looks great and as many reviews have said, the camera hump actually looks fine in person.
  • First thing I did after initial setup was go for a run with bluetooth earbuds. No problems there.
  • No heat issues when watching videos or playing games.
  • Speedy, quick to load, smooth. I've had no hiccups, stuttering, or bugs noticed yet.
  • While the C-to-C cable is long enough, the included Type C to Type A cable is incredibly short. You'll definitely need to get longer cables (and higher capacity chargers).

It's too early to say anything about the battery, but I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem. Looking forward to more regular daily use.

I received mine today and agree with your assessment. The width of the phone compared to the nexus 6, while minor on paper, makes a big difference in the hand. I had no issues with my nexus 6 but I'm liking this better as far as size.

I've found the speakers to have noticeably better sound and can go higher in volume compared to the n6. I'm also quite pleased with the sound output from the headphone jack.

I ordered the $20 adopted case as well. It fits very well and doesn't add much bulk. The phone is beautiful without a case, I'm not a big case person anyway, but a bit leery not using one as I've never had a phone made out of aluminum.

I'm wondering when they are going to be back in Stock? And why you just can't place a order. I'm on the wait list. Congrats on getting one, enjoy ☺

Ditto, I managed to snag one today by refreshing a few times. I'm guessing it's a trickle of re-stock from cancelled orders.

The speakers are great; crisp and clear.

The back is a bit slippery, but I'm going to run the phone naked, as I have with all my previous phones. I had a skin on my Nexus 6, but I'm not going to run with one here; the phone looks too good to put one on.

May I ask, are you referring to the Google Store or Huawei's site? I have never seen the Google Store show anything available for the past week or so. Huawei has them from time to time, but both 128GB versions are currently sold out. And both times I went to pull the trigger (Google and Huawei) they just went out of stock for the model I wanted.

I'm about ready to just give up and go another way. It's starting to feel like a game at this point, like they keep dangling it as available and when I go to get it, they yank it out of reach. At what point did we have to start working to GIVE people money? Just set up preorder and let people order them. Give an approximate date and let it be that. I'd love to have one,but at this point I'm starting to wonder if they'll ever be in stock again. It just feels stupid to have to work this hard to buy something. And I just saw someone on Swappa selling one for around $900 (apparently he dropped it from the original $1200 asking price). So now we also have scalping in the mix.

I'll probably give it another week or two, and if nothing materializes I'm done.

I agree. And it seems like the battery is going to be really good for me. Much, much better than I was getting with the 5X.

It was available on Google play today, but hard to get, and it was only the 32Gb model. I never could get one. I think you can still order one from Huawei, but only 32 & 64GB. I got orders from both Google & Huawei now (128 & 64) , I'll decide which one to keep later. Unless you just have to have the 128Gb, I wouldn't give up. It seems like Huawie is starting to ship them pretty quick.

The reason I'm going for the 128GB is because if I'm going to keep this thing for more than a year, something that's harder for me to do with non Nexus devices because OEMs keep dropping support, then I want to make sure I'm getting what I want. Besides that, before I was going for a 6p, I was looking at an MXPE, and planned to get a 64GB and add a 128GB SD card and keep my music locally. Since there's no expansion on a Nexus (outside of external memory drives) you might as well go with the largest. I don't have a problem with the price, I've been buying devices full retail to keep my UDP with Verizon, my problem is the way they're handling ordering.

It just baffles me that a preorder can be out of stock. Since it's a preorder, most of the orders already made don't have available stock, as evidenced by the fact that certain ordered models are being delayed, so why couldn't they just let you place your order and they'll ship it when it becomes available? It's not a hard concept, but apparently it's over their heads. People were saying an advantage over the OP2 was that the Nexus could at least be ordered. Now they're starting to look like they're in the same boat. At least with OP they have the excuse that they're new. Both Google and Huawei have been doing this for a decade between the two of them, there shouldn't be any excuse for this.

You've had a month to pre-order. Now they are trying to get those shipments out the door before opening it wide.
Apparently the 128 gb is selling better than expected. They will catch up eventually. OPT still needs invites and they are discontinuing it soon in favor of the Mini.

Yes I did, but I tried to wait for some reviews on it prior to buying. After I found out that there was an embargo on reviews, I decided to risk it and order, but they were out of stock by then. With Huawei, I was told that all support would have to be through them. When I found out that only applied to hardware issues, I went to order from them and they were out of stock as well. They've also had a month to build up stock, and apparently they had stock to begin with when ordering commenced. We're not talking iPhone numbers here, and Huawei is the fifth largest OEM in the world.

This is the first I'd heard that OP is dropping the OP2, from all I'd read the mini was to be sold along side it. The only thing they've discontinued is the OP1.

I agree and feel your frustration. Unfortunately there's always been issues with Google and ordering a Nexus at launch. If you really like the phone and plan on keeping it for a year, just be patient and hang in there. It's definitely not ideal, but you'll eventually get what you want and be happy you waited. Just keep visiting the Play Store as they'll slowly trickle in the next week or so. In a month I'm sure they'll have full inventory. That's been the pattern over the past few years. At the end of the day, having to wait a couple weeks isn't gonna kill you. And to be fair, there was about a 2 week window where you could've had placed your order. That's actually an improvement for Google. If you really like it though, you'll wait it out and it'll be worth it.

And what are your options? The MXPE is cool and there are some great phones out there, but let's be honest, the 6p is head and shoulders above the competition right now. If you settle for something else, you'll regret bit being patient in a month from now.

The 6p is great, but the MXPE has some advantages as well. The way I looked at it is this,
N6p pros - fast updates, metal build, fingerprint scanner
N6p cons - no expandable storage, higher price for top model, currently unavailable

MXPE pros - SD card, quality build, Moto apps, cheaper with more storage capability
MXPE cons - updates are unknown at this time, no fingerprint scanner, reports of build issues and issue with Motorola customer service

So they both have their good and bad points. My last 3 phones have been Motorola, and I like their implementation of apps like Moto Display and Assist over Google's version, but I feel it's time for a change, not only because of the issues with Moto and Lenovo, but also that I've always wanted to try a Nexus phone. I'm still running my '13 Nexus 7 and like it over anything I've seen released since, but it'd be nice to have both phone and tablet be on the quick list for updates.

Seems the only cons you listed would be storage, price, and unavailibility, as opposed to features or build of the 6P itself, which is solid (unlike the MXPE). With storage, you could get the larger model (which would then affect price), or move more things over to the cloud (e.g. music, etc). Unavailability is a waiting game.

I would definitely wait for the 6P, especially if you've already had previous Motorola phones. I previously had the 2013 Moto X, and while it was great, I've decided after two Nexus phones that I'd keep sticking with Nexus going forward. Clean, fast, and fluid with no middleman for updates.

I agree with much of what you said, however the build on the MXPE is said to be very good. It may not be a full metal build, but I can't think of a Motorola model with bad build properties.

In any event, I decided to make concessions and take what was available. I picked up a 64GB Aluminium 6p when it popped up as available. Perhaps if they come out with a graphite 128 in the mean time I'll cancel this and go with that, otherwise I'll just deal with it.

Yeah, the build on the MXPE is really good. Solid with a great feel in the hand. It's the best phone I've even used.

But I returned it because the 6p has the potential to be absolutely awesome. But I won't know for sure until it arrives later today...

I think you made the right choice to order the 6p...patience will have its rewards...
