Later than some getting into the EVO stuff, bought 2 for my wife and myself at Christmas 2010. Former user for years of Nokia, BlackBerry, and other products including HTC running Windows Mobile. I'll take the EVO and Android any day over those, amazing device and technology. Couple of things that are probably redundant from other postings, but someone may find useful.

I expected the EVO to have a lousy battery life, but that's the trade-off for that much horsepower and usefulness. I got a Seidio "Innocell" 3500 mAh extended life battery recently and loving it, still in the break-in period so not yet up to what the useful charge will be. Trade-off for that is having a thicker replacement rear cover, but it's well-designed and you don't get shadowing around photo edges taken with the camera like with some covers that somewhat block the camera lens field of view. Not that much thicker and heavier than stock. I'd highly recommend the brand based on previous experiences with their larger batteries on other devices, top-notch quality. Hated to give up a "gel" cover I had with the stock cover setup, but Seidio makes a nice combo case kit for the extended battery and cover that I'm getting and can be found here:

I rooted my EVO so I could use some of the nice utility apps that require full system access and also wanting to uninstall some of the stock Sprint apps that are normally protected, a little hesitant being new to the Android OS, but it went flawlessly using this utility:
unrevoked
Unrevoked3 for simple rooting, Unrevokedforever if you plan on loading other than stock firmware. I did the 3 since I'm staying with HTC/Sprint ROM's, etc. If you do this, follow this video EXACTLY and you shouldn't have any problems short of a power failure on your PC or your phone getting unplugged from the USB while in process. Works like a charm and takes about 20 minutes with reboots. If you're not a master hacker, use this utility and don't fool with all the geeky, time-comsuming and dangerous manual methods for rooting.

After rooting and uninstalling a couple of things like the stock Nascar app, I got too adventurous and uninstalled the Sprint Voicemall app, trying to get rid of only the Voice-to-Text portion (useful only for a good laugh on the transcription accuracy). Lost the entire Voicemail app shortcut and those settings. Found it here and was able to reinstall:

Had some trouble trying to figure out how to install with HTC Sync after downloading to my PC (I don't think you can), but if you go to the app link on your EVO it's a breeze to do it that way. Along those lines, a good freeware app for uninstalling stock Sprint apps is Titanium Backup, available in the Android apps market.

Hope any new EVO users find some of this helpful, and feel free to e-mail if questions or you want to chat. I have some good recommendations for some of the best freeware Market apps and some to avoid, in different categories, having tried quite a few of them.
