Mac/wi-fi address says "unavailable" wtf?!?

I was going to connect my nexus s to my wifi at home and the way my father had our wifi set up is to put the mac address from the device into the computer instead of a password....well when i went to figure out the mac address from my nexus it says "unavailable" i have never seen this on any wi-fi device what is this?

never mind i think i had to try and fire up the wifi signal on my phone its working now
