mail icon not updating

When I get new email I get a little icon telling me I have "1" or more new mail waiting for me.

However, since the update, when i read or delete that mail, the icon remains at "1". Right now it says "1" and there's NO mail in the inbox at all (read or unread).

Any ideas?

same exact thing has happened to me numerous times ... no idea what causes it
