I got the Thunderbolt yesterday (first Android phone for me) and I love it...but, I'm trying to optimize my battery (not horrible so far, but want to see if I can improve anymore).

I am not sure how to control the sync for all my applications like I've read. I go into settings>account/sync>click the apps I want but very few of them allow me to set a schedule for them.

Also, do you recommend using the power saving settings or just disabling that?

I think power saving settings are useful when you're starting out. Once you get things set up and you've got your battery life where you want it to be, then you'll have enough information to make your own decision. I don't think there's a "right" answer to it's worthiness.

On to your question... could you possibly give us an example of the apps you would like to set sync settings for, or are wondering if there are sync settings for. A little more info would be handy :)

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'm just concerned it's updating weather a lot in the background. I have the following things to choose from, but most of them don't have any sync options under settings>accounts & sync:

Backup Assistant
Facebook
Facebook for HTC Sense
Google
Mail
News
Stocks
Weather

Now, I don't have any newsreader set up, so how do I make sure it's not checking for news? Same with stocks.

For me:
Backup Assistant - off
Facebook - once a day (it updates when i open it)
Facebook for HTC Sense (it updates when i open it)
Google - left alone this is push email
Mail - different based on importnace (4 email accts one at 15 min one at 30 one hourly)
News - none, updates when opened
Stocks- none, updates when opened
Weather - left alone i think it was 3 hours or something

If you go into most of those apps, they let you alter updates within them.

I wouldn't use backup assistant. Your Google account will handle syncing of all of your contacts now, and if you ever moved to a feature phone (or iPhone or any other Smartphone) it's quite easy to export your contacts. Backup assistant was a GREAT program when "Snake" was the big phone game. Not so much anymore. ;)

If the arrows in a circle are Grey next to News and Stocks then they aren't being synced. If they're green, they are. If you want to stop syncing them, click on them and uncheck the first box "Sync News" or "Sync Stocks"

I have Facebook, Twitter and Weather syncing every hour, and I'm getting 15+ hours out of a charge, so I think you can leave them as they are.

Thanks for the help guys, it's much appreciated as I'm new to Android.

I have another question (go figure): If there's something new on Facebook (which is syncing), how come the new updates don't get pushed to my homescreen with a 1/2/3/4/etc on the little icon like with messages or mail?

Hey, I have a question. how do you turn off the backup assistant? I went into it and cleared data and forced stop, but you cant uninstall it. So how do you get it to stop updating?

The only way to get around Backup Assistant is to skip it during the initial phone setup. Sadly, this means you'll have to do a factory reset if you want to get rid of it/stop it from syncing.
