Well, i checked today what processes/applications were draining my battery and surprise surprise... MAPS was number one at 84% !

now, i didnt not use GPS or Maps in over 28 hours... the phone was off charger for about 12 hours when i noticed that Maps was still number one battery drainer... that means that i have not used maps for 16 hours prior to putting it to charge overnight...

Despite the fact that i used it once briefly yesterday shouldn't Froyo have shut it down automatically?

Otherwise, my number one battery draining application besides Android/idle is Bluetooth (is there a program that disconnects bluetooth when i am not using it? )

I've had the same problem with Google Maps lately. To check you need to go under Settings --> About Phone --> Battery --> Battery Use.

You guys are misunderstanding how that battery use thing works. Just because it shows high, does not mean it's killing the battery. I run a live wallpaper that shows 90% battery, yet my phone is not draining much. You should be looking at battery usage with Spare Parts or a battery app.

The battery usage should reset after each charge. If he its still number after charging, and you haven't used it since charging, then something is wrong.

You could open it back up, and make sure you back out of it, and not use the home button. You can also force stop it in applications. It might have just got hung up. A restart might also fix it. Spare parts might also help track down whats starting the issue if it doesn't go away.

A lot of people do not understand how to read the Battery Usage section of the phone properly. Your phone's battery drains 100% of the time (just leaving it on). When something OTHER than the actual phone plays a role in battery drain it is expressed as a percentage in the battery usage section.

For example if your Android system is 70% or higher it just means your phone is idle a lot. What? how can this be? Well, if the Android system % was lower than 50% it means other processes would have to come up in % to total 100% along with Android system.

Another example: Android System @ 85% battery usage drains LESS battery than Display at 50%. Again, the percentage is not a RATE of drain but more of a percentage of total drain.

Google maps showing 80% usage means nothing else is running that is using the battery but Google maps.

ALL the processes have to add up to 100% the lower the numbers of each process the more everything together is draining the battery. The higher the number is the more battery is being drained by 1 process alone. again NOT how MUCH battery/minute/second/hour is being drained but more of a percentage.

That is exactly my point, i have not used Google Maps for 2 (two!) days and 2 full recharge cycles, why is Google maps today shows 91%... i didn't open it, and i used phone for internet browsing, mail etc... it was not just laying down?!

The gps doesn't you use battery unless your actually using it.

Have you restarted the phone? Have you tried force closing maps thru the applications menu?

yes but you don't know what apps are using it behind your back and when, silly!

i know this thread is old but hopefully someone reads this post i am having the same problem with google maps my phone is barely lasting 9 hours sitting idle 90% of the time i send maybe 5 texts while im at work and by the time i get off i have to put it on the charger on my way home i saw that maps used 90% of the battery the other day so i force closed and still after next charge it used around the same percent i tried turning gps off today and same thing i used to get alot better battery life any help would be appreciated

i had the same problem with google maps. my phone would drain fine and last the whole day and then some. after i updated google maps i noticed that my battery would last only 4 or five hours before it needed a recharge. i went in and removed the update for google maps and now my battery is lasting up to 15 -18 hours

Food for thought.

If your battery use screen shows anything else other than these layouts - then you need to either disable or uninstall the application(s).
