Maps waking device despite not being used!

I rebooted my phone, charged to 100%, and used it for 2 hours.

Question: Why would Google Maps make my device 36 times? (as reported by gSam battery monitor)

(Android system woke my system 24 times), and my exchange mail client only 7 times?

When I setup my phone, I went into Maps and location settings and told it not to report my location.

I also signed out of latitude.

When I go into task manager on my Galaxy S3, it does NOT show Maps as an active app.

What's going on here?

I went into applications thinking I might DISABLE latitude all together, but it's not even listed?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
