thinking about switching to the MAXX, and coming from the SIII. Is there any development being done on custom roms / kernels for the DROID MAXX, or is it still too new?

sounds like a much better phone, and Samsungs are cheap and have crappy radios / antennas, just want something better.

thanks

Due to the Locked Bootloader, the chances of actual ROM's is very very slim. There might be some based on the new 4.4 update, but even then, it won't hold be able to hold a candle to the amount of ROM's on the S3.

Have you considered a dev edition Moto X? Unlocked bootloader and probably more ROMs than the Maxx. Aside from the battery, I think it's a better phone anyway?

The Dev Edition MAXX can run VZW Moto X ROM's according to some dude at XDA who got it going. it disables hardware buttons and shows on screen Nav buttons, so you really will have a Moto X with a bigger battery.

I didn't know there was a dev ed. Maxx. Still, I think the X is a better phone.

Yea, the Maxx and the Moto X are almost the same exact phone, aside from a couple of things:

The Moto X has a curve to the back that is supposed to be more comfortable.
The Maxx has a 5" screen and the X has a 4.7" screen which gives the X a slightly higher dpi but its unnoticeable to the naked eye.
The Maxx has the much larger battery.
The Moto X is going to get software updates first it seems.

They do both of DEV Editions from what I've read, but I haven't gone searching for them. There are no memory differences, no processor differences, the hardware is EXACTLY the same aside from the things I mentioned up above.

Don't forget the Maxx has 32 gb compared to X's 16gb

The X is available with 32 GB.

In the end, it comes down to screen size, battery size, and form factor. All things that are more personal preference and need based on usage.

I will say that after using both the Maxx and the X together, the X definitely "feels" like the better phone. Not only the curve, but the build quality is just better. Where my Maxx is having weird creaking problems and is starting to form a gap on the left side, the X is rock solid with metal buttons and a nice finish on the back. Still not worth the drop in battery size, but I see where someone would say that the X is better.

as for no roms due to locked bootloader, the Droid X had a locked bootloader and there were plenty of ROMs for it. i'm seriously liking the sound of the MAXX, due to the battery size tho
thanks for all the responses!
:)

I was thinking about getting the Developer MAXX, but a quick trip over to xda revealed there are zero roms there for it. I have a feeling since the bootloader is locked unless you get the Dev Edition, and the phone is only sold in the US for Verizon, there just won't be much support, if any. And the phone has been out for a while, so there should be something there by now. On the other hand, the phone is already pretty much stock android(which is most of the reason I rom anyway), so maybe it won't need as much support and most users can accomplish what they want thru mods that work, like maybe Moto X mods.

I would honestly go with a regular Maxx. From my personal experience as someone who used to flash a new ROM every two weeks, I've no no troubles using this phone as it is. There are plenty of Root features that can be used to tweak the phone to exactly how you want it. and with it being $449 right now, its totally worth it.

Not sure I agree on the superior build quality of the x. Ergonomically in your hand it's more comfy, but it feels like a flimsy device to me. The Maxx feels solid, and it's heavy, a sign of premium build. Not unlike the difference between a cheap car vs. a premium car when you close the door for instance.

As someone who just soft-bricked my S3 routinely reflashing a mod that I have flashed before and since numerous times, I don't think I can have a phone without a custom recovery. And the regular Maxx...isn't root thru an exploit? Which means they'll lock it up after an update. Which means you have to choose between root and update, correct?

You do know what flimsy means right? The Moto X doesn't bend or flex like some of the other plastic phones (Cough Samsung Cough)
I haven't used the Maxx but I've read about a lot of creaking issues :\

So all that being said, Does anyone know if there will be envelopment in the future? I have the Droid Maxx currently and I love it! I was part of teh 4.4 soak test and features are great. Batterylife is also amazing @ about 48 hours of use. However Root and Roms would be great! Agreed this line of droid smartphones has great potential.

My phone is better than your phone! No, mine is better! No it's not. Yes it is! And so on and so forth ad nauseum...................

The Moto X, the Maxx, the Ultra are basically THE SAME PHONE with small differences. But they are ALL GREAT phones! Some people like bigger, some like smaller, for some the battery is the main issue, some want a curved back with great feel in the hand, some want wireless charging, for some it's critically important they're first in line for updates, but one is not better than the other - one is just better FOR YOU!

Good grief, it's not like everyone didn't have a choice when they picked their phone. "Haha, I got the X and you had to settle for the Maxx." (Or vice versa.) No! You didn't have to settle, you could have gotten either, you chose what you wanted that had the combined features that mattered to you. I was sold on the X when it first came out and was sure that is what I was going to get. BUT, when I went to my local Verizon store after they all came out I was shocked that I really preferred the Ultra or Maxx. They just appealed to me more, maybe not to you. It wasn't that I couldn't get another phone - I found out I really wanted what I ultimately decided to get. I don't think I'm better than you, I'm just me and I'm happy with my choice. And you're just you, and so forth......... :-)

My personal opinion is that all the Moto phones are the best out right now, but thank goodness we have choices!!

Whew!
