Media scanning at startup takes FOREVER

i know all android phones do that media scan thing at start up, but my phone takes literally 3 or 4 minutes to do it. It will say "media scan completed" then 10 secs later it will say "media scan running" then "media scan completed" again. Its VERY annoying because the phone lags like crazy when i try to use it while it is doing this. Im on complete stock. Anyone know what the problem might be?

I am also having this happen, but have just been dealing with it. Until it is finished scanning, I'm unable to properly alphabetize my apps.

Perhaps the scan is happening first for files on the phone and then scanning the SD card separately?

One thing that will definately slow down the scan process is if you have a bunch of pictures or video stored on your sdcard.. It has to sort through all that junk at start up.

The cleaner and more organized your sdcard the faster it will scan through it...

I do have that. For me, it's not really an issue though as I utilize the scanning time to run my Airplane mode fix.

you might also want to check the speed class of your sd card, if it has a C with a 4 enclosed within it or a 2, then your media scanning time is going to be really poor. Class 6 or class 10 have the much faster read times and write times as well. That's why the Class 10 SD cards are recommended for those crazy dslr cameras with insane pictures. I bought a class 6 that arrived the day i got the epic and my mother's epic is also slow with the included card. The prices for a class 6 have dropped a good bit, so something to think about.

From my experience the card probably needs to be formatted. The epic seems to be very sensitive to being improperly removed from a computer as a mass storage device. I've had to format the card a few times but every time I did it dropped the media scan time back down to almost nothing.

When you have it mounted as USB Mass Storage, look for a file named .nomedia on the card. Should be copies of it in a few places.

Copy that .nomedia file to any folder you don't want the system to automatically look in for media files. Pictures in folders with a .nomedia file will be invisible to Gallery, but not to most other image apps like QuickPic.

The .nomedia file is an empty file. You can't make such a file on Windows because Windows insists files must have a name, not just a file name extension.

But you can make a blank Windows text file, send it to your phone either usb or gmail it, and rename the txt file to .nomedia. Put this file whereever you need it.

dude, mine took 6 hours, i went to bed at four and it just started, woke up now, still got 20% to go T.T im about to shatter it, if it wasn't for the fact its hard to break

I don't know if you still have the problem, but I solved it by downloading an app call "Startup Manager" from the google store and on the system option uncheck the "media storage" option.
