Media Sync mode won't mount

Instead, the phone mounts a CD Drive called "Verizon Mobile". It's an intermittent problem that I can usually clear by toggling between MTP and Mass Storage Device mode. I spent about an hour on the phone with Verizon L2 tech support, and they had no explanation, it just started working when I was on the phone with them. Anyone figure out a reliable way to clear this bulls***?
