How can I tell if my phone is working to it's maximum potential? Looks like my internal phone storage is 142MB, is that sound about right? What else should I look for?

Internal storage is 256mb (some of which will be occupied by system apps, etc.).
I'd recommend against the task killer; Jerry wrote a great article about them. You should read it and decide for yourself, though. I'd also recommend getting MinFreeManager; it lets you tweak Android's native memory management.
