How come MONA doesn't support this?

Give users the ability to turn them off or on.

For example, maybe someone thinks I need to see a certain thread, or that I might have some insight. They could mention me so that I see it.

I use this no matter where I end up posting.. I think this should be a universal thing as long as the name is correct.. sort of like having an openID account which covers all aspects of the nation.. your ID and no one else. But this will become hard to do seeing how some try to create the same user name using special characters etc.. Using this on the forum is a good idea, better than my global @

In this instance and if I wanted to have another member join in the conversation.. I would simply type @name here, which would alert said member to view this post. This could be abused thou.

Using the @moderator/admin etc could alert them on spamming post or off topic postings..
