Messages app only notifies on first message

[Android Central Question]

My Note 4 , Android 6.x will only give me notifications on the first message in a thread. If a response comes in while messages app is open to my original posting, and I am awaiting a response, the response will come in silently with no notification. It seems that the only way I can get a notification is to close the app and only then it will notify me of an incoming message.

Is there an easy way around this so that I have notified of a continuation of a thread?
