Messages crashing multiple times/day?

Anyone else having messages app crash multiple times per day? Since the last Google update a few weeks ago the app will get slower and slower until it just stops working altogether. It's behaving as if it's got a memory leak. I've cleared cache a zillion times to no avail. Force closing the app and/or phone restart will fix it temporarily but over a period of a couple hours the issue will come back. Anyone else had this issue and have you figured out how to fix it?

Try clearing cache,data,force stop it

Done the first and the latter, clearing data deletes all my messages doesn't it? If so that's not acceptable.

Yes if back up on it repopulate everything

I personally haven't noticed it on my Pixel 3 XL, but then again I don't do a ton of messaging. Do you use Messages for Web? If so, try clearing the connection with it.
